Random

Before I drop a longish post about who will/should win oscars, I thought I'd drop some random thoughts that have been runnind around in my head.

- Alicia Guastaferro : do I hate everything about her or am I just jealous?  People like that make me wonder.  Not that I wish I was a not-so-pretty beauty pageant queen.  And what's the deal with that?  I admit that my taste in women is more unconventional than others (midgets and pregnant ladies, anyone?), but how come beauty queens aren't...pretty?
- I wish the word "giant" would only be used when applicable.  Like when something really is GIANT.  CNN posted on their headlines that divers video-taped a giant sea spider in the depths of the sea.  I was expecting something frightening and huge, but it just looks like a jellyfish.  We need to stop using the word "giant" so often.
-If Aquaman is the King of Atlantis...and Namor is the King of Atlantis, is it the same as when there was a pope and an antipope or are they going to have to duke it out?  Because my money is on Namor.
-No matter how hard she tries, no matter how many horrible films she stars in every year (by my count, she's starred in 2 this year), Lindsey Lohan will never EVER look like Marilyn Monroe.  Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.  Sorry toots.  Monroe used her sexuality in a way that made her sensual as well as sexual.  Lohan just comes off as cheap, even if she has a delectible chest.
-I can account for why people like Larry the Cable Guy.  Some of the things he says makes me chuckle and I know that he is playing a character.  But why (or even how) some people continue to like Jeff Dunham is absolutely beyond comprehension.  Haven't we, as a society, gotten past the whole "ventriloquism is hilarious" stage?  I guess not.
-I was flipping channels last night when I saw Lewis Black on the History Channel.  I stuck with it for a while and it eventually showed Black "interviewing" Robin Williams.  I don't find Williams particularly funny, but Lewis Black was losing his shit.  I've never seen him look so gleeful...then I wondered whether he was just afraid that Williams might fall into some bypast coke rage and rip his face off.  Like when you see a T-Rex, how you're not supposed to move?  When you are with Robin Williams, you better laugh or...you know...you might find yourself on the business end of a deadly rampage.
-I received the first disc of season 5 of MI:5, a British spy show that is pretty much better than any action show we have over here.  The first two episodes of season 5 do in 2 hours what 24 does in 24.  Long story short, MI:5 is 24 for people who don't want to dilly-dally for 22 hours for a 20-minute payoff.  The first two episodes are incredible: it's thrilling, it's clever, and it's scary because it shows how easily a fringe element of our government could stage a coup without any of us ever knowing about it.  I found myself so invested in these characters without even knowing it: when one of them dies, I was starting to get misty and I wanted him to be avenged....even though this character was such a small part of the show.  The other thing I like about MI:5 (and before I go on, let me clarify that I loved Alias) is that it is so much more realistic.  Nobody says "endgame," there aren't any unneccessary twists for the sake of keeping viewers (which I'm convinced is an American phenomenon) and the viewer is absolutely sure that all of the stuff that happens could actually happen.
-I discovered Jeeves and Wooster last night.  It's a show starring Hugh Laurie and Stephan Fry as (respectively) a bumbling blueblood and the valet that keeps him from disaster.  The show is based on a slew of comic novels written by PG Wodehouse.  It doesn't have a laugh track and it reminds me very much of Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and, to an extent, The Office.  I wouldn't be surprised if Ricky Gervais and Larry David (two sitcom geniuses in their own right) cite Jeees and Wooster as an inspiration, even if only a slight one.  It's also nice to see Hugh Laurie play the polar opposite of House, who by now is almost sure to be typecast.  To be more clear...this show isn't really like the three mentioned before...there are only glimmers of similarity.
-Larry David is set to star in Woody Allen's next film (after the Spanish one).  I hope the world doesn't explode when the two meet for the first time on set.  I love both of them so much, so I hope the world doesn't end before 2009.
