Dark Water

Blackwater seems like kind of a blessing in disguise.  They can do the dirty work that comes with fighting a war against a faceless combatant, the stuff we don't want are troops to do.  And then, when they do those bad, horrible things, we can villify them.

That's a win win win, right?

A Swedish cartoonist depicted Muhammed as a dog.  He said he was trying to ellicit a reaction from the conservative Islamic world...since dogs are considered dirty animals among the conservative Muslims.  While I think it's kind of ridiculous to get so upset over a cartoon (I did kind of get a little miffed about Serrano's Piss Christ, though), especially when it's meant to upset people, I also think that the Swedish cartoonist might be a tad self-righteous.  He claims that all religions should be mocked democratically and when asked about the death threats he's been getting, he responds that his art is worth dying for.  Read that again.  His art is worth dying for.  I'd agree if he was Titian or Rembrandt or someone worthwhile, but he's a Swedish cartoonist who's best and brightest is to draw Muhammedog.  That's not worth dying for.  I think, for the most part, the Muslim world has been fairly accepting toward the fun the Western world makes of them.  Sure, they've blown some shit up, but not because of Saturday Night Live or South Park.

It seems like prophets are the laughingstocks of the religious world.  There's some pretty mean spirited stuff out there.  What did Jesus ever do to us to deserve being made fun of?  And what about Muhammed, arguably one of the most influential men...ever.  I think making fun of dogma and the stupid convention of modern religion is fair game, but can't we leave the poor prophets alone?

I swear to god I'm not on drugs.

It's like Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize and Fox News making fun of him for it.  Why?  Can't we all just agree that Al Gore is an influential man?  Why do we have to politicize this?  Al Gore has appealed to the common sense of the whole world, non-judgementall, in order to save it for future generations.  That's something worthy of Sean Hannity's derision?  Really?  The only reply I have for such aspersions is disgust.  I'm not a Gore fanatic and I think people need to move into the present if they still complain about the Gore/Bush popular vote scandal (it's happened before, people), but i wish the pundits on Fox News and others who are maliciously trying to defame Al Gore should just grow up. LEAVE GORE-Y ALONE!!!
