Kyuhyun sighed for the umpteenth time, one long finger tracing the rim of his glass of whiskey. His eyes were unfocused, seeing something only he could see. In the background, the soft and lilting voice of a young girl could be heard. Guilt struck Kyuhyun square in the gut. He shouldn’t be thinking of this, of him.

Kyuhyun groaned and buried his face in his hands as he tried his hardest to block out the unbidden memories running past his mind’s eye.

-

Kyuhyun grunted. He couldn’t help it - being awoken by a large mass making itself known by jumping on his stomach wasn’t a very pleasant way to wake up. He cracked his eyes open to glare at the offending object, or rather, person, on his torso. The sight he was met with was nothing short of glorious, with wet, jet black hair; fox like eyes; perfect nose; and pouty pink lips that were currently upturned into a sly smirk. Kyuhyun let his eyes wander down, down, down, and good lord, he changed his mind about this not being a very pleasant wake-up call. He closed his eyes and wrapped his long arms around the very naked man atop him and rolled them over until they were lying side by side facing each other.

The other giggled. “Good morning, Kyu~” he sang.

Kyuhyun buried his face into the other’s neck. “Good morning, baby.”

-

“Baby, what are you doing?” Kyuhyun had his arms once again wrapped around the man, this time in a back hug.

“Mmm, making kimchi jjigae. Go away, you’re distracting me.”

“That’s kind of the point, babe,” Kyuhyun quipped, forcing the man to turn in his hold. His hands moved themselves from the other’s waist to his hips. He played with the hem of the other’s shirt, fixing him with a pointed look.

“Babe,”

“No,” was the reply. The other turned himself around and went back to work slicing strips tofu. “No, Kyu, I really want to get this done now…”

His voice trailed off as Kyuhyun lowered his face to press open mouthed kisses all along his neck.

“Kyu,” he gasped. Kyuhyun’s hand started massaging the patch of skin just above the button of his jeans. A moan escaped him as Kyuhyun, the sneaky bastard that he was, began pressing his fingers under the waistband.

“The food can wait,” Kyuhyun whispered as he pulled the other away from the kitchen counter and back towards the bedroom.

-

They were walking hand in hand. The sunlight was pleasant, warm, comforting. People were walking past, not sparing them a glance as they continued on their busy and brisk trek to wherever it was that they were going.

He was looking around when something shiny caught his eye. He tugged on Kyuhyun’s hand and silently pointed to the store’s display. Kyuhyun chuckled before placing a kiss on the other’s head.

“You want it?” Kyuhyun asked.

He hesitated. “No… I bet it costs a fortune.”

Kyuhyun chuckled again and tugged the other into the shop, the other protesting the whole time.

They left the shop 15 minutes later, Kyuhyun with a pleased smile on his face, the other with a happy albeit slightly disgruntled expression as he looked down the shiny new ring on his ring finger.

-

Kyuhyun lifted his head, a bitter smile gracing his features. That was one of the last happy memories of him.

-

Kyuhyun sighed and rubbed his face. He was tired and grumpy and all he wanted to do was jump into his bed and not wake up for a solid 20 hours. He shoved his key into the lock and kicked the door open, not caring when it hit the wall with a bang.

“Love?” his voice called from within the house. He ignored it in favor of shucking off his shoes and throwing his coat onto the couch. He didn’t look up as he heard him walk into the foyer. “Hey baby~ how was work?”

“Fine,” his answer was short, terse.

He looked up in time to see the smile falter on the other’s face. He pushed passed him and made his way to the bedroom.

“I made dinner…” the other was quiet, sensing that Kyuhyun was not in the best mood.

“Not hungry,” Kyuhyun grunted.

“Oh… oh okay.”

Kyuhyun heard no more as he slammed the door to the bedroom.

-

“This new secretary just got hired,” Kyuhyun said. It was a few days later, and Kyuhyun was lying on his side of the bed as the other got ready to get in.

“Oh? Is she nice?”

“Yeah. I guess. I haven’t really paid attention.”

The only response he got was a soft murmur as the other crawled into bed. A yawn was let out.

“Good night Kyu,” he murmured. And that was it. The bedside lamp on his side went out and that was it. No good night kiss. No cuddling. Kyuhyun looked at the other and noticed the distance between them for the first time. His heart clenched and he moved to embrace the other. As soon as he touched the other man, however, his hands were pushed off. “Not tonight, baby. I’m really tired.”

-

Kyuhyun spun in his chair. It was another late night in the office, and he was just waiting on an email of confirmation from his boss before he stopped work for the night.

A knock was heard. He looked up to see the secretary peeking past the door. “Sir is everything okay here?” she asked. Her voice was soft, sweet.

“I… yeah. Everything’s fine. I’m just waiting for the boss to email me back,” he said.

She pushed the door open more and entered the room. She walked towards his desk, her heels click clacking on the ceramic floor tiles. She bent down to lay a manila folder on his desk, but stayed in that position. Kyuhyun glanced at the folder, taking in the name of one of his company’s clients, before he let his eyes travel up her arm and…well that shirt was definitely unbuttoned more than necessary. Her full breasts were falling practically falling out unrestrained. He shifted a little as he felt something stirring in his gut and forced his eyes to meet hers.

“Thank you,” he said, voice strained.

“No problem,” she replied breathlessly. She stood up and left the room, left Kyuhyun to shake his head to try and clear his mind.

‘No. I can’t do this to him…’

-

The hours he was forced to work got longer and longer. He no longer returned home to someone waiting for him with a smile and dinner on the table. Every night, he opened the door to darkness and rarely was there food ready for him to eat. The distance between him and the man who shared his bed gradually got bigger, and it was almost to the point where they didn’t talk for days on end.

At work, the secretary continued to lay folders on his desk with her shirt unbuttoned enough for him to see more than he needed. He began keeping track of the colors of her bras, began to let the stirring in his gut grow larger.

One day he stopped her as she straightened herself. He grabbed her hand and didn’t let go as their eyes met. The looks in their eyes were identical, filled with lust and nothing else. He stood up slowly and their eyes remained locked the whole time. He pulled her around his desk and towards him, the stirring in his gut a full, raging storm at this point. Once they were face to face, he leaned in, slow and hesitant, and kissed her. He kissed her and didn’t stop and lost his battle against lust for the first time.

-

It continued like this for months, even when the company stopped making him work overtime. Each night he would return home filled with guilt that multiplied tenfold as he slipped into bed and curled up with the man he claimed to love.

-

Kyuhyun’s fingers curled around his hair and yanked hard as the next few memories resurfaced.

-

His secretary began coming into work looking ill. He noticed. He notices everything that goes on in the office, after all. He noticed that there were times when she would not be in her chair for longer than five minutes before she was running for the nearest bathroom with her hand over her mouth. Every time he witnessed this happening, his blood would run cold.

-

Someone was knocking on his door. He looked up to see his secretary, his very pale and weak looking secretary.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Kyuhyun,” she gasped out. She stepped into the room and managed to close the door behind her before she crumpled. At once he was out of his seat and by her side.

“What? What is it? Tell me,” he grasped her arms and pulled her up. Her eyes were filled with tears.

“Kyuhyun,” another gasp. “I’m…” she trailed off as soft sobs began to wrack her body. His blood turned to ice. ‘Please no… please.’

“I’m pregnant,” she spit out. Kyuhyun froze as his whole world crumbled around him.

-

Kyuhyun’s eyes filled with tears and he pulled his hair harder in hopes that the next few memories would disappear. But, of course, they didn’t. They would never disappear.

-

Kyuhyun didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know who to turn to, where to go. He returned home that same day after hearing the news, leaving the secretary in the same position on the floor.

He flew through the door and went into their bedroom. The sounds of running water could be heard coming from the adjacent bathroom, so he waited on the bed for the other to finish. As soon as the other walked through the door, Kyuhyun pounced, snagging the man into a hug and ignoring his squeak of surprise.

“Kyu, what are you doing home? What happe -” Kyuhyun cut the other off with a kiss, a breath taking kiss, filled with sorrow and desperation and pleas.

“Kyu what are you doing?”

Kyuhyun shushed the other, bringing him to the bed, stripping off the towel covering him and shedding his own clothes. He didn’t allow the other a chance to speak the whole time, cutting him off with a harsh kiss when the other would try.

It was only afterwards when they were lying in each other’s arms that he couldn’t stop the other from speaking.

“Kyuhyun, look at me. What happened? What brought this on?”

Tears, hot and unannounced, spilled from his eyes. “I’m so sorry,” he gasped. “So, so sorry.”

The other said nothing, choosing instead to let Kyuhyun admit what was bothering him without coaxing.

It continued like this for a few minutes, Kyuhyun sobbing and apologizing and the other remaining quiet.

“I did something horrible,” Kyuhyun choked out. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

“What is it Kyuhyun. What did you do?” the other was looking at him helplessly.

“It was a mistake, a horrible, terrible mistake and I’m so, so, sorry,” Kyuhyun began sobbing again and again the other waited it out.

“I cheated on you. I’ve been cheating on you for months,” Kyuhyun finally whispered. He squeezed his eyes shut as he felt the other become rigid in his arms. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

The man in his arms pulled away from him. He sat up slowly and turned his back on Kyuhyun.

“But that was it, right? You only slept with…with whoever you cheated on me with?” the other’s voice was hopelessly desperate, as if he was trying to grasp for anything, anything that would save him, them.

Kyuhyun choked back another sob. “No…No…” tears streamed down his cheeks as he watched the other tense once more. There was silence, deep silence, and Kyuhyun knew the other was waiting for him to explain.

“She’s pregnant.”

The words were out there, were finally out there. Kyuhyun held his breath and watched the back of the man in his bed, the man he loved, still loves, despite his horrible mistake.

Slowly, the man got up and made his way to the bathroom. Kyuhyun got up to try and follow him, but the other was too quick for him, already in the bathroom and slamming the door behind him before Kyuhyun could get both feet on the ground.

“Babe?” he called through the door. Sobs, broken and painful, were heard. Kyuhyun didn’t know what to do. “Babe, please. Please open the door.”

“No, Kyu,” the other cried. “Please, please just leave. The house. Leave the house. I need to be alone.”

“No, baby please. Just -”

“Kyuhyun I need you to leave. Please. Please.”

And Kyuhyun held back his sobs as he answered, “Okay. Okay I’ll go. Just call me if you change your mind.”

-

And that was the last Kyuhyun ever heard from him again. He was texted a few hours later, told that he could go back to the house. He rushed home and found it empty. Empty.

He fell onto the bed and cried himself to sleep.

He was pulled from sleep in the middle of the night by the sound of a door clicking shut. It was pitch black, but he ran from the room to the front door in hopes that the other would be back. Nothing but cold darkness greeted him. He walked back to the bedroom, deciding it was all a dream, and stopped when he noticed all the drawers open. His heart stopped beating.

‘No, please…’

He looked into one of the drawers and sank to the floor. His clothes were the only things that remained within. He stayed there for what could have been hours refusing to let the truth sink in. He stood up to return to the bed. Something shiny caught his eye and he looked towards the bedside table. His eyes filled with tears and his heart shattered. The ring, which once symbolized their happiness, stared mockingly back at him as he crumpled back to the floor.

“NO!” he sobbed. “No, please! No!”

His fingers gripped at his shirt, right over his chest, as if trying to rip his heart out. “No…” he was broken.

“No please…Sungmin, please, please no…”

The last thing he saw that night was the ring, glinting in the light and blurred by his tears.

-

Kyuhyun bit back a sob as the feelings from that night washed over him again. He laughed bitterly through his tears. ‘It’s been four years, Sungmin. Four years and I’m still not over you.’

Suddenly the door flew open and Kyuhyun hastily wiped his tears.

“Daddy!” a little girl cried. She jumped onto his lap and looked into his eyes, red from crying. “Daddy, what’s wrong?”

Kyuhyun closed his eyes and swallowed hard. “Nothing, sweetie. Nothing.”

“But your eyes are red, Daddy, something has to be wrong.”

“I said it’s nothing!” Kyuhyun regretted screaming at her, at his daughter. “I’m sorry. But really, baby, nothing’s wrong. I promise.”

The girl’s eyes went glassy with unshed tears. Her bottom lip began wobbling. “Min, sweetie, I’m really sorry. Daddy’s just in a rough mood tonight. Just… go to your room and wait for me to come and tuck you in, okay?”

The girl nodded her eyes still glassy. She got off his lap and walked out the door, but not before turning around and looking at Kyuhyun again. “I love you, Daddy,” she called.

“I love you too, Min. Now go on.”

Kyuhyun let his head fall to his desk as the door shut. Of course he had taken custody of his daughter. It was his fault, completely his fault, so he took responsibility. He hadn’t seen his secretary since the day she gave birth.

So he took care of her. He got rid of most of his hours to raise his daughter as best he could. He had named her Min. Another mistake, or so he thought countless times. A mistake because every time he thought of his daughter or called her by her name, he was forced to think of Sungmin. The only person he’d ever loved, the only person he ever would love. The one he let slip through his fingers. The one that got away.
