Let's say a distance runner spends a year preparing for the Boston Marathon. He runs every day and runs some races leading up to the big event. He wins some of the races, but mostly, he does not. He runs the Boston race and does not win.
Question.
How much time should this runner be given to come to terms with the fact that he didn't win? A couple of days? Does the runner sit around with the irrefutable proof that he did not in fact win and then say that he "wants to keep his options open". His friends and supporters all say that he should be "given some time" .
Huh?
Dude, you did NOT win. It's over. Move on.
