575 Project

I heard about this on one of my favorite podcasts (Animal Wise Radio) recently. It's an art exhibit called the 575 Project, by artist Cyrus Mejia. He was one of the founders of Best Friends Animal Society (the largest no kill animal sanctuary in the country, and the place where Michael Vicks's dogs ended up so they could be rehabilitated).

It's called the 575 Project because Cyrus had always heard the statistic that 5 million dogs and cats are killed every year in US shelters, but he felt like that number wasn't something that was tangible--it was too large to really comprehend. So he did some math and found that there are 575 dogs and cats killed every hour. This number is much more easily understood, and he uses it as the basis for the pieces in the exhibit (such as 575 collars, cage cards, food cans, rabies tags, etc.). So all of the things in the exhibit have to do with raising awareness of the shelter problem.

It's definitely a thought-provoking exhibit, and done very creatively. I bet it's more profound in person.
