Behind a cut 'cause I get really long winded!
1.What drew you in to the SCA?
I joined the the Maryland Medieval Mercenary Militia (now evolved into Markland) when I started college. I began to occasionally attend SCA events during college (I made it to Pensic 2) but picked up activity after I graduated. After marrying Rorik, we were extremely involved in Markland, but identified a need for inter-group communication when there were cultural conflicts between the groups at some joint events (a couple of museum openings among other things). It was for these activities that we received our AOA's. We really moved to primarily Scadian events after Gosling#1 was born. Markland at the time was still a very much college/single group, and didn't deal well with children, while the SCA was much better (amazing, isn't it?).
2. What has surprised you about the SCA?
Its durability and ability to grow. It may seem that we have trouble attracting new members, but we keep on growing. I am thrilled about the quiet efforts that are being made towards increasing authenticity, while maintaining the acceptance of the disconnect of so many different places and times being portrayed at once.
3. What has surprised you about your children?
That they survived into adulthood LOL! There was some thought that they wouldn't make it, and our favorite saying when they were misbehaving was "And how old would you have been on your next birthday?" I'm surprised by how different they are from each other and us, but thrilled that they are both compassionate people who will stand up for what is right.
4. Where would you go if money and time were not issues?
It's a toss up between a world tour and off planet, but only if there was a culture to investigate. Some places I would need to time travel, such as parts of the Middle East. Meeting people, learning how they think and feel, their culture - it's all good.
5. Who is the one person you would love to have a conversation with?
My Dad. He passed away in 1985, and I would love to know what he thinks about the kids and how we've done with life. I'm feeling fairly maudlin today, so some other time it might be someone else.
