I didn't really enjoy this book because I hated Quentin so much. He and his friends were so awful and unlikeable. The only character I even mildly liked was Alice and well. You already know how that went.
I didn't hate Quentin, but I was SOO disappointed in him, particularly midbook. But he learns to regret what he did and to feel a measure of the misery he caused. I'm hopeful that he learned enough not to go this way again in the sequel, but yeah, I really don't know how it will go.
His friends - I feel like Quentin doesn't really know them yet, and neither do I. Alice we learned about the most because we get to see her private feelings, but we don't really see that with Janet and Eliot. I haven't decided on them yet. Again: sequel. Hmm. I guess I'll find out.
I felt pretty divided over this book. Similar to you, I really enjoyed the beginning. Unfortunately, the sulky middle section pretty much killed it for me. I've heard about The Magician King, but I'm not sure if I'm up to reading it.
Sorry I missed your review so I didn't link it! I will remedy that asap. I just read it and I think we shared similar feelings about this one. I seriously had to take a break in the middle - I was so disappointed in Quentin and worried about the book sinking further. I had to sleep on it and then pick it up, and thankfully I found it got somewhat better. It was moving upwards..but now I have that once bitten feeling - the story could change suddenly and badly and it's going to be difficult to predict. I'm probably going to read THE MAGICIAN KING soon but I'm taking a little palate cleanser by reading a couple of other books in between.

Yeah. Reading a book when all you can think about in the back of your mind is "is it going to get bad again?" isn't really that much fun. Sounds like you're making a good choice by taking a break between books. I do look forward to reading your review, when you get to it, as I'm pretty on the fence about reading it right now.
