Penny Dreadful

Via solarmovie.tl, I've been watching episodes of the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. It's a wonderful representation of dark Victoriana. There is something evil and sinister at every turn, and I love it.

Woven amidst the storyline are Professor Murray, in search of his missing daughter Mina. Hence there is an abundance of references to the undead and everliving. Dr. Victor Frankenstein in all his angst and madness, births not one but two creatures here. His less than ethical medical practices are sought out by the professor, to help decypher the mystery that surrounds his daughter. Dorian Gray puts in an appearance, and wouldn't you know it, the local theatre is rehearsing a production of Sweeny Todd!

In addition, Vanessa Ives, Ethan Chandler and Brona Croft are central to the plot in their own nefarious ways.

I find myself happily drawn to the use of the Victorian's obsession with the occult as a major plot device. It's something I've always been fascinated by, and just today I am having to make the difficult choice of either binge watching more episodes or sleeping. For the moment sleep wins, because I have to work tonight. Besides, the show is best enjoyed in the evening, and in darkness. Much more atmospheric that way.

More about the cast with photos (possibility) at a later date.

Ciao.
