the gift that keeps on giving

(alternate title: "I've Made a Huge Mistake.")

Hey, internet: guess whose parents got Apple TV for Christmas?

I don't know what I was thinking. Actually, I do know what I was thinking: I was thinking that I would get all the credit for an awesome, parent-friendly gift, and the Fungineer would install it, explain how to use it, and provide ongoing technical support.

I may have been mistaken.

So far, my mom has attempted to order about 17 movies (janey: check Netflix first. Netflix is free. mom: am I in Netflix? j: are you in Netflix? mom: presses OK j: NO! No, you're not in Netflix! Go to Netflix! mom: looks at me sideways, finger hovers over OK j: NO!).

Dad, who loves to watch French TV (but with the sound off, because he doesn't speak French), has spent the past half hour scrolling through the foreign titles (mom: I don't like foreign movies. janey: I bet you do. There are a lot of them. mom: I don't. ...are they subtitled? j: try one and see. ...NO! ARE YOU IN NETFLIX?).

At least they can both agree on youtube, where they can watch videos of their newly renovated house (even though they're sitting in it), and streaming CBC Radio Two (Winnipeg broadcast, naturally).

Down on the floor, Dog 2.0 is spellbound by the scrolling video covers, but he couldn't care less about the renovation videos. He's seen that show before.

(...and down in the basement, the Fungineer shops for noise-cancelling headphones and browses craiglist apartment listings.)

family matters, the many benefits of being me
