It all started with the innocent urge to do some Christmas baking. Don't ask me where it came from. I don't have kids or neighbours or relatives to feed, I'm heading back West in a matter of days, and much as I'd like to, I know I can't eat it all myself, so why I felt compelled to give Mixy such a workout, I have no idea, but the dough for a batch of jam-jams is chilling in the the fridge, and the ingredients for two other recipes are coming to room temperature on the counter.

And then there's the summer borscht. It's not summer, I realize, so hardly any of my ingredients are fresh, but I had a coil of sausage and wanted to make it into a vaguely healthy meal, and it takes no time at all to chop that up and set it to boil, really, so now I've got a stockpot full of broth to skim and a few pounds of potatoes to dice and dill to snip.

But the tipping point came early this morning, when I realized that the laundry room sure could use some cleaning, and suddenly found myself vacuuming behind the dryer and wishing that my knees weren't so bony because it's hard to stay on them long enough to give the floor under the furnace the kind of scrubbing it needs.

I'm like the Modern Menno cover girl here. Help me, internet. Send liquor and playing cards, stat, before I learn to crochet.
