I used to assume that certain things I saw on TV just weren't true, that they were made up for TV-land--like schools with more than one storey, or brick houses, or seasons like "Spring" and "Fall" that seemed to require coats other than a windbreaker or a parka. But then I moved to Nova Scotia, and then to Ontario, and realized that all these made-up things actually came from somewhere, because there were all of these century-old brick houses with tiny rooms and big trim around the windows and doors, and kids went outside for Halloween in cloth costumes and masks, rather than whatever would fit over their snowsuits and tuques.
By the same token, I've always assumed that movies about high school weren't true, that nobody had cliques and fun clubs and big, colourful proms with dates and bands and balloons, that everybody was basically huddling on the edge of social acceptability and spending way too much time on a hobby and/or sport they secretly hoped they'd excel at, but what if I was wrong about that too? For the record, my grade 12 grad was AWESOME--garbage bag dress and rocks in my salad and chicken dance and all--but still, I wonder.
Is there a truth at the heart of a TV-land High School Experience, internet? And if so...what did I miss?
