Classes started on Tuesday the 5th; unfortunately, I only have one class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so it was sort of anticlimactic. I have found off-campus parking (read: free) in a place I technically shouldn't park, because they have signs saying private parking, violators will be towed, etc. But it's the Scottish Rite Center, and nothing ( Read more... )

I've been interested in cases since I started studying Old English which, being a Germanic language, relies on them. I find it a real challenge when translating texts to think in cases when my natural instinct is to look at word order - what's funny is that I'm fluent in Hungarian which is a heavily inflexive language but I'd never even realised it until recently.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear its mostly going well :)

I hardly think about word order in Russian, because it's very similar to English.

And yeah, you find out all sorts of fun things about your native language when you learn a new one (my English grammar has improved so much).

Janet... Lin. Ah! Janet of Carterhaugh married Tam Lin. I get it now!

Scottish Rite: Are they like, Masons?

"I get it now!"

Yay! A cookie for you! (though I don't know what made you suddenly think of it)

The Scottish Rite are indeed Freemasons (along with the York Rite - who have the Templars - and the Shriners - who do souch lovely work with my daughter's feet). It's one route for obtaining the 4th through 33rd degrees.

Oh. No, my real name (I wouldn't use my LJ handle to sign up for classes!). My (maiden) last name is Swedish and rather odd and apparently quite hard to pronounce; which is an excellent way to weed out telemarketers - if they can't pronounce my name, they don't know me.

Mwa ha, we shall be a multilingual friends list!

I suspect Alan learning Spanish will show me exactly how much of _that_ I've forgotten. It's been... eight years. Oy, I should never have let it get that bad. Must take refreshers! Though I'm gun-shy about going back to German because I don't much care for the teacher here at CSUS.
