Pangolin Common Room, Monday Morning

May 22, 2006 08:00

Janet was sprawled on a chair, reading a book and avoiding unpacking her stuff over in B1. Also, avoiding dealing with anything. And wondering how long it would be before it looked reasonable to go back to 239/240 to move the espresso machine down here for the week.

Then again, this was Fandom. Caffeine addiction and weird stuff did have a high ( Read more... )

After leaving Jack, Isabel continued wandering around the camp, checking out the cabins. She poked her head in the Pangolin Common Room and smiled when she saw Janet. "Hey stranger!"

"Hey!" Janet waved at Isabel. "In retrospect, going on vacation the week after everyone new arrives wasn't my wisest choice."

"Overwhelmed by all the newbies?" Isabel smiled. "There's a lot of them. I'm still meeting new students everyday. How was your trip anyway?"

"Somewhat overwhelmed, yes," said Janet, nodding. "The trip was lots of fun. I got a tan, at least, and a bunch of souvenirs that I still have to unpack and hand out to people."

"Where did you go?" she asked. "I'm vaguely jealous since the only place I'm liable to be going this summer is back home to Roswell for a week."

"The Carribean. On a cruise," said Janet. "It was a family thing, though," she added quickly. "My uncle decided that if he wasn't going to see me during the summer, the least he could do was to spend some time with me some place warmer than Colorado Springs."

"Okay, vaguely jealous has just crossed the line into extremely jealous. I've never been to the Carribean," Isabel sighed. "Your uncle? What about the rest of your family?"

"He needed to get away from his job for a while," said Janet. She shook her head. "They're, um--" Damn. Though no one had ever asked that before. "They're dead. Uncle George is my guardian."

Not that her parents were dead, really. In fact, they'd been to her memorial service.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize," Isabel said, slightly embarassed. "What islands did you go to?"

"How could you have known?" she asked. "It's not exactly common knowledge, and it was a while ago." She hadn't been close to her parents over the past decade anyway. So it didn't hurt. Much. "St. Thomas, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rico. I think my feet still hurt."

"You're right, but still," she shrugged. "It sounds like you had a nice time then. And you got back just in time for the fun to start. What workshops are you in? I'm pretty sure we have at least one together."

Janet nodded, figuring no further answer was really needed. "It was great. Do you know how much shopping I did?" She reached into her pocket to pull out her schedule. "The one Parker's boyfriend is teaching, Writing, Wilderness Survival, and Archery," she read off. "You?"

"Shopping is always fun. And isn't a lot of stuff down there duty-free?" Isabel asked. "Oh good, I'm in Jarod's class and Archery as well. We should have fun. I'm also taking First Aid and Karate. I just hope I don't have to use anything I learned in First Aid in Archery or Karate."

"As a matter of fact, it is. Including alcohol," said Janet, grinning slyly. "We're going to have a lot of fun, especially on the beach. If we want to get away with anything, we can send Parker to distract Jarod." She snickered. "Isn't Archery held in the Danger Shop? You're safe there, at least."

"Nice, tempt me with what I can't have," Isabel laughed. "It's true, Parker will definitely be a nice distraction for Jarod. Maybe then he won't notice we're working our tans instead of doing whatever it we're supposed to be doing." She shrugged, "Danger shop or no, it's still the scary ninja teaching the class."

[sorry, got distracted by my jog]

"Oh, that's right." Janet covered her mouth with her hand and looked sheepish. "I'm sorry about that. I still think that's incredibly odd that your system metabolizes alcohol that way." She snickered. "I do have several swimsuits and lots of sunscreen stocked up for that. And true, she's the scary ninja, but I don't think she's allowed to injure the students. But I still wouldn't worry about using first aid skills--I'm a doctor clinic aide, and I'll be in there, remember?"
