Room 239/240: After Classes

Mar 22, 2006 16:22

Janet came in after Paleontology, dropped her backpack somewhere, and sat down to see if Carolyn had e-mailed her back yet.

OOC: Open for interaction, though the thread with Isabel and Veronica is NFB and locked to them and anyone else they may have invited in.

A bit after seventh period, Isabel came down to see about getting the Western Civ notes from Janet. And if she was alone, well now was as good a time as any to tell Janet the truth.

She stopped outside the door and knocked.

"Hold that thought," Janet said to Veronica, getting up to open the door.

"Hey, Isabel!" Janet smiled and acted normal. "How's it going? You're here for the Western Civ notes, right?"

"If you don't mind. I really appreciate it," Isabel said. "And do you have a few minutes? I wanted to talk to you about something."

"I offered, didn't I?" asked Janet, grinning. She opened the door widely. "I'll grab them. Though I do have company, so if there was something else, maybe that part could wait?"

"It can. It's not the end of the world or anything," Isabel said as she stepped into the room. "Oh. Hi Veronica."

"Isabel, how are you?" Veronica asked. "We were just talking about you."

"Really?" Isabel asked, a bad feeling suddenly coming over her. "About what?"

"Well, for starters, there's the fact that you and your brother were found in the desert outside of Roswell, New Mexico," she said, holding up a stack of papers that included adoption certificates. "Then there's the fact that your brother is being investigated by a special unit of the FBI that investigates aliens."

She paused. "Do I need to continue or would you like to confess now?"

Isabel's eyes got wide as Veronica described how she and Max were found in the desert. Then she winced at the mention of the Special Unit. But when Veronica mentioned confessing, she started to get mad. "Confess to what? Being adopted? Yeah, that was a big secret. I only told Jack my third night here at school. And some lunatic agent from a branch of the FBI that's been completely discredited developed some sort of strange obsession with my brother. Okay, I confess. That's the truth. It all happened."

"Isabel, if you're an alien, that's not a problem at this school," said Janet. "We've got alien students, and students who're familiar with aliens."

"I'm not," Isabel said, well aware that because of the blood she'd offered for Angel, Janet knew there was definitely something different about her. But if she could just get through here and now with Veronica, she could explain everything to Janet tomorrow. She tried hard to squash the little voice that said the reason Veronica was questioning her now was because Janet told her what was up but it wouldn't be silenced.

"Veronica I have no idea why you'd think that. But I'm not."

Veronica smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile.

"Well, how about explaining your ability to remove stains from your clothes with a wave of your hands? And don't deny it. Xander told me he watched you do it," she said.

"Or you can explain this voicemail message I got a while back," she pulled out her phone, hit a few buttons and played the message, grateful that her cell phone had speakerphone capabilities.

"That was your voice, right?" she asked after. "And Max, that's your brother's name."

Veronica looked at her expectantly.

Damnit! So Xander had seen that. She just wished he'd come and talked to her instead of telling Veronica. And that damn phone message. She should have known.

Isabel took a deep breath and drew herself up, pulling on the alien ice princess facade she thought she'd left behind in Roswell. "So what if I am?" she asked. "Janet already mentioned the fact that there are aliens here. Is one more such a big a deal? Unless you think I'm looking to take over the world cleaning the stains from everyone's laundry."

"It's not a big deal if you're honest," Veronica said. "But why keep it a secret when you know how accepting people here are about differences?"

She paused.

"Unless you're in cahoots with other evil doers to try and kill someone good. Just what exactly where you doing when I caught you sleeping in Angel's room?"

"How about because telling the truth could get me killed," Isabel hissed. "You think those papers tell you the truth about me? They don't tell you anything." She turned and started to stalk about the room.

"We've been keeping secrets since the moment we were found in the desert. Our own parents don't even know the truth about us." She passed by the desk and picked up a coffee mug, idly turning it in her hands and flinching when it shattered. "That Special Unit you mentioned? Yes they were interested in my brother. Do you know why? Because he risked everything to save the girl, the human girl, he loved. And when the Special Unit got hold of him? They wanted to cut him open and see what was inside. While he was still alive. I patched him up myself."

"So ask me again why I don't tell people the truth."

"The first thing everyone needs to do is calm down," said Janet firmly, though she kept her gaze on Isabel. "I understand that you've had bad experiences with some humans, but no one here wants to vivisect anyone." She glanced at Veronica, then back at Isabel. "We've all had bad experiences with evil here. I'm sure that was Veronica's primary concern."
