But then ASCAP stuck out their greedy little hand. Some people at Open Mic were performing cover tunes, and ASCAP said that we needed a license to allow the playing of the copyrighted songs. In order to continue, we needed to pay them a yearly fee, which, in addition to losing money on Open Mic, we just couldn't afford. If we didn't pay, their in-house company lawyers would immediately sue us. A little research shows that they typically win, too. It was a lose/lose situation for us, so we had to make the hard decision, and stop Open Mic.
What's even worse? Had we capitulated and paid off ASCAP? There are still two other companies out there who do the exact same thing, so we'd have to pay them off too.
We really are sorry, but we had no choice.
