Re. the fitness thing:

I assume I'm one of those you had in mind. I feel compelled to make the distinction that I lift to be functionally strong and as a competing-against-myself sport, not just to change my appearance. The latter of which has only happened a tiny bit, because I'm such a hard gainer.

Re. the professionalism of occupations bit, I have mixed feelings. As a licensed social worker, I'm a beneficiary of that professionalization, as the entry requirements to do what I do are steeper than they used to be (and thus the pay is a little higher). I could share with you some work stories that I think present a case for requiring some jobs to be done by degreed professionals, even if it didn't used to be that way in the Good Olde Days.
