Local Ballot Measures - Election Center 2008 - Elections & Politics from CNN.com I'm a little annoyed, because I wrote a long, thought out commentary this morning, and thought it had posted, but it hadn't. Sigh. So, here we go again...
I've spent much of the past 24 hours refreshing this page, watching the numbers tick along, and now I have some comments to make:
Arizona - Prop 102 "Ban Gay Marriage"
Sigh. Don't look to get your same-sex relationship recognised here anytime soon. It looks to have been banned with a vote of 56%-44%. SHAME!
Arkansas - Initiative 1 "Ban Gay Couples Adopting Children"
SHAME! You have not only stopped a loving couple from being able to care for children where children may not normally be possible, but you've also stopped children from being able to find a loving home. It passed 57%-43%.
California - Prop 8 "Ban Gay Marriage"
For a progressive state, it's coming awfully close to being a bigoted as Prop 8 looks to pass by 500,000 votes. SHAME!!!!
Colorado - Amendment 46 "End Affirmative Action"
Don't expect special treatment anytime soon, you're all equal. This may or may not be a good thing. Gay? Woman? You're just the same as those men.
Wikipedia explains it better than I can. It looks to fail by 20,000 votes. Look, I don't think it should pass, but
this blog has a good balanced explanation.
Colorado - Amendment 48 "Human Life From Moment Of Conception"
Is that "bun in the oven" a life form? No, apparently. Or at least not in Colorado. Passed by 73%-27%
Florida - Prop 2 "Ban Gay Marriage"
SHAME!!!. 62%-38% to the ban.
Michigan - Prop 2 "Allow Stem-Cell Research"
Yes, you can now, passing 53%-47%. I'm a little mixed about this, but I think that a small degree of it is permissible. It's when people go mad that is a concern.
Nebraska - Initiative 424 "End Affirmative Action
Yep. No 'discrimination' is allowed, by which they mean that gender, sexuality, race, religion, etc, cannot be considered. It's so hard to define what this means. Equal Opportunity Employment is the way to go. But I don't know if this means yes or no...
There were two other ballots on abortion, but I have no position on this. I think there are times when it is necessary, but running around fixing up a 16-year-old girl's 'mistake' is just wasting a life. Both of the measures look to fail, which means people can go around with a coathanger and a bucket
Alfie-style. Sigh.
I am glad that Obama won, and McCain's concession was suitable and not too overdone, but the booing really got me. Sore losers, anyone?
Interestingly, I was looking at the results from the 2004 election, and I didn't realise that Kerry came so close. I can't believe we had 8 years of Bush.... but then Australia had 11 years of Howard and that was beyond me too. My mother and brother are both wondering how long before someone tries to kill Obama... great. Don't you dare!
I do love a good election race. I look forward to the
next state election in 2011, because I predict the rise of the minority parties. Though I have a feeling
Fatty O'Barrell will win. Sigh. Bring on US Election 2012!
