Went to see Brave. Yeah, I know that it was released in North America on June, but here in Italy it was released last week.
I'm kind of disappointed. It was a good movie, and I did enjoy it, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of dejà vu. With the sole exception of the gender of the protagonist, and the fact that it's a mother-daughter story instead of a father-son one, pretty much the whole movie comes across as a standard fantasy adventure. There was nothing groundbreaking about it, nothing I hadn't seen before.
Pixar came up with Toy story, WALL-E, Up, Ratatouille... I wouldn't describe any of those movies as "standard [genre] story with male protagonist." They were all unique and innovative, they all had "think outside the box" ideas.
Oh, well. At least the fact that Brave made decent money provides yet another proof that executives are fucking morons when they say that there can't be books/movies/shows/whatever with female protagonists because their girl cooties drive the audience away.
movie,
