Is it ok if I punch you in the mouth? You can choose not to feel it!

When something upsets you, is there anything more irksome that some patronizing douche saying "I just choose not to get so upset over something so trivial"?

Even IF the thing in question actually were trivial (maybe it is, maybe it's not and s/he is being ignorant as well as patronizing), newsflash: YOU DON'T CHOOSE TO GET UPSET! You can't control emotions!

They might have a point if their argument were something like "it sucks, but you need to grow a thicker skin" (sometimes this argument works, other times it doesn't... It depends on the circumstances and the context. On the one hand, you need to pick your battles or else you'll be upset all the time, but on the other hand you shouldn't grow too desensitized or else you'll be a doormat or an asshole).

But their argument really boils down to "it doesn't upset me, therefore it can't upset anybody else!"

sad, rant
