okay, so it turns out that actually new york city is bigger than west 34th between 6th and 8th!
i know, captain obvious.
today we took a cheesy tram-style tour bus through lower manhattan and mentally noted all the awesome streets we have to walk down tomorrow, especially greenwich village.
the area around the museum- the upper west side- was like the other end of the spectrum, but just as awe-inspiring. i can totally see what
spizzy and
untoward were talking about now. central park, the old townhouses... THAT'S the new york i was expecting. i can't take enough pictures of houses. luckily, our guide on the bus- a big, burly man with a deep voice- was just as interested in the "pretty houses" as i was, and helpfully pointed them all out (including his favourites- hee).
we didn't spend nearly as much time as i'd have liked at the museum- i definitely have to go back to see it better- but as we were leaving, found yet ANOTHER "weird science stuff" store just like evolution, where we browsed and flirted with the attendant until after closing (and i added to my growing collection of weird science stuff).
oh, and in answer to
alexleven's question: i guess the whale won, because i could find no evidence of the squid! the ocean hall was completely surreal anyway- very much a movie scene brought to life (and one of my favourite movies, too).
we're back at the hostel now for a recharge before heading back out to snap pictures of times square at night. as far as i can tell so far, times square is like niagara on steroids (except that i count only ONE wax museum).
this trip has basically turned into a really elaborate and expensive photo fun day.
