Today was a great day.
It was one of those perfectly hot and sunny days. 27 and no humidity, not a cloud in sight. That doesn't happen too often in this country! So I celebrated by wandering around downtown and doing some people watching. Observed features observed were:
1. Germans really are fatter.
2. I am short. Really short.
3. I am white. Really white.
4. Dogs are perfectly acceptable in stores and restaurants, as long as they fit in your handbag.
5. Nobody had quite grasped the concept of tanning = skin cancer. I have never seen a redder group of people, especially in my house. To go back to the "I am white" note, almost everyone I meet (at work, in the shops, biking to work, whatever) says that I really need to get in the sun more, with an almost frightened tone of voice. I guess the white hair doesn't help much . . . And not like there's much sun in this country to get out into, anyway.
But all in all, it was one of those fabulous days when I really appreciate how lucky I am to be back here again. I love how fabulous the food is, the amazing old buildings and how the bike is a perfectly valid mode of transport. Ahhh . . .
On another note, Heineken's Old Bruin Beer is way too good. I forgot how good it was. It's only half the alcohol, but it makes up for it with an amazingly sweet flavour. Almost rum and coke-y. Spectacular. And at $0.75 (Canadian) a bottle, how can you go wrong?
