Well, I think the mono has pretty much faded and now I'm just plain lazy. It's too bad that I spent all of July sleeping, but since I'm not getting any more sleep come September 1, I hope that I've banked up major some sleep hours. Yes, there are people out there who claim that you can't bank sleep. I have chosen to assume that those people also think that the holocaust didn't happen. And that kittens aren't cute.
So I'm pretty much back to work and I think my hepatitis is now gone. I ended up missing three weeks of work from this disease, and have spent the last two weeks working half days. What did I do with my time, you ask? Well, while researching mono, I found our family's old Better Homes and Gardens Family Medical Guide from 1973 and discovered the joy of reading outdated medical books. It's absolutely hilarious. My favourite quotes include:
"Bacteria are one-celled micro-organisms of the vegetable family"
On viral pneumonia: "While some studies indicate that tetracycline may be effective in treatment, no one is entirely sure of the value of this antibiotic in this disease."
"A Mongoloid child is a mentally retarded child whose features somewhat resemble those of the Mongolian race . . . No one really knows why these children, who are of the white race or occasionally of the Negroid race, are born with Oriental-looking features . . . " as if they published that! It's so offensive!
There's also some real goodies in the childbirth section, including:
"In recent years, intravenous alcohol has been effective in suppressing labor that has begun prematurely. Successful alcohol treatment may postpone labour for two to six weeks with the delivery of a mature infant."
"It may be cruel, and frequently futile, to forbid cigarettes entirely to a [pregnant] woman who is accustomed to them, but nothing but good can come fron cutting consumption from a pack or two a day to perhaps a half dozen cigarettes."
On a pre-marriage trip to the gyno: "The prospective bride should be helped to understand her sexual responsibilities in marriage."
I could go on for hours. And I have. Family members have long become sick of my important medical speeches at the dinner table. Anyway, so that's what I've done to keep myself out of trouble for the last few weeks. That, and hours of watching Kenny vs. Spenny with
tokkan and
momomoto. I'll be back at work tomorrow performing my night vision study, assuming that I actually get up before 11:00 for the first time in a month. Late-whore!
PS: Oooh,
ghostgirl, I've been thinking about doing my master's at Delft in Design for Interaction. Assuming I get my bachelor's, that is. I was wondering if I could get your opinion about the school and such. Any input would be greatly appreciated! But I don't have your email, so could you email me at {my lj username} at hotmail dot com? Thanks!
