History: Why Study It?
A big question people these days ask is, “what is the purpose of studying history, and why is it important to know what has happened in the past?” Studying history is very important for many reasons such as learning from the past, knowing where you come from, seeing similarities from past to present, and to use history as a guide to the future. In some ways, if we can eventually understand our past, then we can get a better idea of our present and our future. History can teach us how to conduct ourselves in the future. History helps to maintain our legacies and culture. Overall it is important to know history.
Studying the past can be very time consuming, but is time well spent. We can get Ideas for the future by looking at the past and learning from others mistakes. History is not only thousands of years ago it’s also decades and centuries too. If you look back only fifty years ago, the world was in a completely different state than what it is in now. We learn from their mistakes too like segregation, slavery, war, and the list goes on. When we look at older civilizations we can examine their way of life and how they fell. Then we can compare their life to ours and see what not to do and kind of get an Idea of what not to do.
It’s a good thing that history is a part of the school curriculum because even though it may not be appealing to a lot of people, to know it is great. When you study history, in a way you can see how blessed we are today and not take things for granted. We have so many opportunities and freedom today. We are very lucky to be alive in this age and not other ages, personally I like studying history even though sometimes it can be boring but I get over it because it is exciting too. History is a good subject to learn and is not a waste of time at all.
