I prepared properly for watching this, with a toasted and buttered hot cross bun, a nice cup of tea and my knitting. I may have made occasional incoherent noises, but fortunately, there was no one around to hear me.
I'm so glad it was good-- not perfect, and there were shades of Empty Child that didn't feel justified (the Tenth Doctor hasn't earned his miracle "everybody lives!" endings just yet), but overall, definitely good. Rose's sheer joy at stepping foot on alien worlds (applegrass!) was spot on - and this is one of the things I love about Rose as a companion, how gleeful she is over travelling through space and time, which is just as it should be- and Billy did a good job as Cassandra. Some very creepy moments, some which were just sort of softly sad (and I'm so glad the Face of Boe didn't die in the end) and some ones that were just nice little touches ("Now that is enigmatic.")
I liked the opening scene, especially with the difference in Mickey and Jackie, Jackie turning her back and walking off, not watching it go, Mickey staying watching that little bit longer, which is something we've seen before.
So basically, there were some rough spots, in terms of plotting, but the acting was good, the characters and the characterisation was really good, and I'm looking forward to next week.
