Wow, it's been a long time since I've updated. My apologies. I think my blogging interest has kind of waned a bit. I guess I've found other ways to waste time. But oh well, I'm sure I'll come back to it. In fact, I hereby pledge to update at least a little more often than twice a month. LOL. Let's say at least once every one to two weeks. I think that's a good start.
When we climbed today, the wall blotted out the sun...
So we climbed in the shade!
This Monday marked the first heat for "Team Acrophobia" in UBC's Storm The Wall. Our team consisted of (in order of event) Justin Beaudry, swimming 225 yards; myself, sprinting 450 metres uphill; Andrew Arnold, biking 2.8 kilometres; Mark Chui, running 1 kilometre; and Reuben Heredia, the wall guy. We completed our heat in 20:37, ranking 7th out of the 8 teams in our heat. Obviously there was some stiff competition... LOL.
We were pretty confident that we would not advance based on our time. So you can imagine our surprise to find out that we somehow advanced to the semi-finals! :-O Don't ask me how. I have no clue. But we made it!
So today was our semi-final heat. This time we managed to finish in 19:17!! It was definitely a personal victory. "Just like Rocky," as Reuben so aptly put it. We still came in last place (actually 6th out of 7, if you count the team that didn't start... which I do) but it felt great to slaughter our old time by over a minute.
Here are some photos from the Monday race.
Here I am running the last 50 or so metres of my sprint. I'm getting pretty tired by this point.
This is Andrew right after I tagged him. I think this shot deserves a close-up.
This picture speaks louder than words.
Here's Mark being hoisted up the wall.
Using his l33t climbing skillz0rz he managed to get to the top without any additional help.
I was next.
Getting the leg up.
And over I go! Next up was Andrew.
Here I am grabbing Andrew's leg in very erotic fashion. But it's what "got him up" the wall.
Justin was fourth. The featherweight of the team was lifted up effortlessly by the two brutes at the top of the wall.
And over he goes. I went back down to help the last man, Reuben, get over.
Here's Reuben squishing my head between his feet.
But once that behemoth leg was lifted, Reuben was pulled to the top. Everybody then climbed down and we crossed the finish line.
This event was so much fun. And I'm so glad we got to race twice. I know we stood no chance of winning, but I had such a good time just competing. I hope I can somehow do it again next year, even though I won't be at UBC.
My hockey team's playoffs start tonight. We finished in 2nd place in our division, so I think we may actually stand a good chance in the playoffs this season. Here's hoping!
Well, it's time to buckle down for exams now. As of today I officially have one month left at the University of British Columbia. Then, I'm graduated. Scary but cool stuff! See you all soon.
