All right - so I've finally found the time and energy to post to my journal. I'm not making any promises, but I'll do my best to update. Now with that said, let's get to the good stuff

dude, i looooove going to markets in 3rd world countries. so interesting! i just love checking out all the crazy stuff that the have for sale that's so different from stuff back home. plus, whereas locals expect tourists to buy souvenirs, they often dont really think that you'd be buying food in the markets, so they often get excited when you do.
Dude, I totally agree. Yeah, some of the stuff for sale is unappealing to me - if not downright disgusying - but it's still really interesting! Plus, I feel less like a tourist and more like one of them, y'know? It's so satisfying to experience run-of-the-mill activities like that. :)
In Costa Rica, there were heavily armed guards outside of all the banks...
As for the trail (not that I've done it but I've read about it a shitload), remember to go SLOW and drink lots of water... I've also read that buying a walking stick is a really good idea.
I'll definitely be taking it easy - the altitude is kicking my arse! As for walking sticks, it's my understanding they're no longer permitted on the Inca Trail. Let's just hope I'm not my usual clumsy self and fall down. :)

I was watching "Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations" last night & he was in Peru. I just randomly checked your journal today and the coincidence seemed worth commenting on. The show confirmed that I must see Machu Picchu someday (*adds that to mental list of things to do*). I was surprised by the severity of altitude sickness Anthony experienced (Yes, we're on a first name basis now;). He was even given oxygen at one point. Anyways, Peru looks like an amazing place. Have a wonderful time and watch out for (or seek out;) the Ayahuasca ... -Andrea

Yeah, the altitude is pretty harsh, but the coca leaves definitely help out, y'know?
As for Machu Picchu, check it out soon because supposedly you'll only be able to view it from afar in a few years - something about it sinking.
I saw a bulletin about using ayahuasca in a ceremony of sorts, but I'm reluctant to do something like that in a foreign country, y'know? Ah well. :/
