“Alright, men, listen up,” Alex started as he paced back and forth in front of the four Mexicans lined up in a row. “I-well… Jack has gathered you here today because he won’t allow me to do things for myself anymore. Due to this completely ridiculous ‘rule,’ I haven’t been able to finish up the baby’s room, and therefore your assistance is necessary.”
The four nodded in a unison that seemed almost practiced before Tony was partially raising his hand, waving it around to get Alex’s attention. The dirty blonde looked to him, eyebrow raised, and the shy man took that as a sign to continue.
“Jack already told us why we’re here and what we need to d-"
“Did I ask you to fucking speak?” Alex snapped, and Tony shrunk away, eyes widening in his apparent shock.
Jaime couldn’t help but laugh at the scared expression that made itself present on his bandmate’s face, what with the fact that he looked tougher than the pregnant man ever would, and that had Alex moving to stand in front of him instead.
“Wanna tell me what’s so god damn funny, Preciado?” he asked, but it was more of a demand.
“Not really,” the jokester of the quartet replied, smile still tugging on his lips as he shrugged his shoulders casually.
And Alex did falter then. His mouth dropped open before closing a few times, and then he turned and walked back down the line completely, having given up on thinking of something snippy to yell about.
“So, uh… Just get to work then, I guess… I’ll be out in the living room if you need me, and, um… Yeah, thanks again for doing this for us, guys.” He almost made it out the door, right foot just barely passing the threshold, but Vic’s voice stopped him in his tracks.
“Care to explain what the hell all of that was just about?” he inquired, features twisted with surprise and a slight mix of confusion. Mike looked exactly as his brother did, gaze flicking between Tony and Alex, and then the British man was coughing in an attempt to make his blush seem like it was due to a sudden lack of oxygen, shrugging as Jaime had just moments before.
"I, uh, just wanted to know what it felt like," he mumbled in answer, keeping his gaze glued to the ground as he waited for them to make fun of him or something.
"What what felt like? Being a dick?" Mike blurt. "We could've just told you about all the times Vic hid Tony's Star War DVDs; you'd know exactly what it's like without scaring the piss out of him!"
Alex couldn't help but glance at the front of said man's jeans, just wanting to be sure he hadn't actually caused such a thing, and when he noticed them to still be dry, he hurriedly looked back down to the ground.
"No, like one of those army captains. You know, like, how they yell about everything?" Alex explained, and it was like the room was filled with a radiance directly from the sun as all four lights in the attic clicked to life.
"Don't test that out on the kid until he's sixteen, at the very least," Jaime said through a chuckle, shaking his head before pushing the sleeves of his old, long-sleeved shirt up to his elbows. "So just to be totally clear, we have to paint the walls and then move everything in a more general area of where it's supposed to go?"
"Yeah," Alex said with a nod, turning to look at them all completely. He pointed to the brushes and buckets of light green paint in the corner of the room. "Just one coat today, and no paint on any of the furniture or the trim or anything." He pointed to the walls next, continuing on with pointing out the obvious. "Jack already put up the tape and everything yesterday, so just go wild, I suppose. But, y'know, not really."
"Our dad's a painter, dude," Vic said as he pointed between himself and Mike. "Like, he paints the outsides of houses and stuff. We know how to paint something as simple as a room. Don't worry about it. Just go relax, y'know?"
"Did Jack pay you to say that?" Alex asked, referring to the whole 'relaxing' part; it seemed to be one of the only words in his husband's dictionary now a days.
"We aren't being paid at all," Jaime threw in, who was already busy trying to open the top of two of the paint cans with Mike in the corner.
Alex, who saw what would probably be his final opportunity to act like a boss, simply shouted, "Then get back to work!" before slipping out of the room.
He made it out to the living room, and thankfully it was before he sat down that there was a knock on the front door. With a sigh, he continued on with his walking, mulling over who could be on the other side. He knew that all four Pierce the Veil boys were already in the baby's room, and if they weren't they were gonna have a serious proble-
"Hey, Lex," Juliet said with a smile as soon as said man pulled the door open. She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his cheek as per usual before sliding into the apartment around him.
"Hey, uh... What're you doing here? I said you didn't have to come by today." It was true, too. He’d texted her as soon as he’d gotten up that morning telling her that she could go out and do whatever she wanted to do since he’d have four guys there to take care of him if he needed anything. Not that he would, but still. “Did Jack ask you to come anyway?”
“Nope,” she answered, shaking her head. After closing the door, Alex turned to face her completely, eyebrow raised.
“So… why’re you here?” he pushed incredulously. It’s not that he didn’t enjoy her company or anything, but she could be doing anything right now. Like, literally anything at all. He didn’t understand why she’d rather spend the day with him than go out shopping or something.
“Well, what if something happened?” Juliet countered, and Alex’s eyebrows furrowed together.
“I’d have one of the guys take me to the hospital or call Jack or something?” he offered after a moment’s thought, and she shook her head again.
“You think they’d know what to do? They’d all freak out. They've never had kids so they’d be clueless, trust me,” she assured, reaching out to link their arms together so that she could walk them down the hall and into the living room, helping him sit down.
“And how many kids have you had?” he asked, a smile taking over his lips against his will.
“That’s completely beside the point,” was her immediate answer, “the fact of the matter is, I’m a girl and girls just have a sixth sense when it comes to things like this. Not that guys don’t or anything, but it’s just different with girls.” She plopped onto the sofa next to him, letting out a slight breath before sitting up straight again. “Do you want anything? I can get you food or something?”
For once, he shook his head. “Can you just put on Dr. Who or Breaking Bad for me? Or The Walking Dead could work, I mean, whatever you’re in the mood for.”
She nodded and turned on the TV with the remote before standing to her feet once more and moving over towards the DVD cabinet, pulling it open and scanning the titles. The first one she came across was Breaking Bad-which wasn’t really that much of a surprise considering she’d helped alphabetize everything only a few weeks ago when Alex had been so bored that that ended up being his best suggestion for ‘fun’ things to do that day-and she slid the case out.
After setting the movie up and pressing play on the remote, she snuggled back down into the couch. A good hour and a half was spent like that, neither of them saying anything as they lounged around and watched the show, but soon enough Alex started feeling hungry.
“Can you make me some… actually, no, wait,” he called out as she started to disappear around the corner into the kitchen. She stopped and leaned back to look at him, her left hand clutching the wall so she didn’t fall. “Can you just, um… Well, Jack went shopping the other day, and I’m pretty sure he bought me Oreos and a liter of Pepsi, so can you, like, just bring me those?”
“Shouldn't you eat something a little healthier?” she asked with a laugh, but she continued on out of the room to retrieve the items nonetheless.
“Well, unless you wanna run down to Subway for me?” he called back, and he could hear her groan in response.
“You’ve had Subway, like, three weeks in a row now. Aren't you getting tired of it? I think I could order for you in my sleep. And all that mayo,” she stopped there, and he could almost see her cringing through the walls. “How the hell do you eat it like that? It’s making me gag just thinking about it.”
She reemerged with the items Alex had requested before he could answer her, but he totally forgot that she’d even asked anything as soon as he saw them. With a sigh and shake of her head, the items were handed over, and Alex could practically hear the angels singing.
Or, rather, Vic had started to sing something in the other room. Same difference, really.
Another half hour was spent with the two sat on the couch finishing up their second episode of Breaking Bad and splitting the food. But, as it had been for the baby shower for Jack, Juliet only got about a third of it all. At least, just like Jack, she understood.
It was as the third episode was beginning that Tony came out, what looked like little, poorly-drawn, light green turtles covering his previously tattered, grey shirt.
“We finished painting,” he declared, and Alex smiled up at him in thanks. “But we don’t really know where you want everything, so we’re gonna need you to direct us on where we should put it all.”
Alex hummed at that, putting down the near empty packet of Oreos and Pepsi bottle on the couch before holding his arms out, saying, “Can you or Jaime-actually, you know what, it may have to be both of you-help me up?”
“Yeah, I’ll go get him,” the Hispanic said before turning and walking back the way he’d come. It wasn’t even twenty seconds later when all four men walked out, and Jaime and Tony each grabbed an arm as Vic squished his own between Alex’s back and the couch, doing his best to push the man to his feet as Mike acted as a spotter.
Juliet, of course, found the ordeal to be just a little funny, and she spent her time laughing about it while Mike made quiet ‘Uh’s and ‘Erm’s as he tried to figure out a better way to get the pregnant man to his feet.
It took a great more deal of effort, but when it was accomplished, Jaime and Tony all but fell on their asses, while Vic did collapse over the back of the couch, all three breathing heavily as Juliet and Mike stopped what they were doing before going back into a fit of hysterics.
“You’re really heavy, dude,” Vic huffed after a moment. “Maybe it’s about time you cut back on the Oreos and Pepsi.”
“It’s not my fault,” he argued weakly, already walking around everyone else and heading towards the baby’s room.
“You’re not heavy, Lex; I told you that they couldn’t do anything if you needed the help,” Juliet called after him, smiling at the glaring Mexicans as a way to let them know she was only joking.
“They may not be very helpful when it comes to heavy lifting,” he agreed, already inspecting the newly painted green walls. “But they sure as hell know how to paint a room.”
“We also do fences and the outsides of houses,” Mike said with a grin as he walked in next, admiring his handiwork.
“I’ll keep that in mind. So, really, I just need you to move the crib from in here to my and Jack’s room. Everything else goes on the walls or shelves, and the walls are still kinda wet, so there’s no point in worrying about any of it now.”
“I can’t lift anything else for, like, the rest of ever,” Jaime cried from where he and Tony were still sprawled out in the living room, and Mike shrugged.
“I can do this myself,” he said, already making his way over to it. After more or less dragging it from the room and down the hall, he returned to Alex’s side asking if there was anything else they could do to help.
“I don’t think so,” Alex mused, mulling the question over as he looked around the room a last time. “You guys gonna stay and hang out with us for a bit?”
“Nah,” Mike answered, waving his hand dismissively. “We all kinda need showers and shit, but we’ll see you later, cool?”
“Yeah, man,” Alex agreed, leading him out to the front door. They had to stop to collect the others, who were still acting just a bit too over dramatic, but then they were all saying final farewells.
The four had only been gone for about ten minutes, Alex and Juliet having found their way back to the couch and the third episode of Breaking Bad, when he turned to the blonde woman, a smile on his lips.
“So how about that Subway?”
