We're barricaded inside Manual High School. I'm so glad I have a key to one of the only buildings in town that resembles a medieval fortress. Some of the custodians are here; we've boarded up the windows and barricaded the doors. Some of my Old Louisville friends are here, too -- and they brought their guns & ammo. There's no way the zombies are getting in here.
We still have light and water and even internet, unlike the rest of Louisville, so I have a pretty good idea of how the rest of the world is faring.
Most of the major international news sites are down, but cnn.com and, somehow, drudgereport.com are still up and running:
All of the local TV stations seem to be down. They're all static except WLKY which has been airing a "please stand by" message for the past five hours.
There are some people up on the roof right now watching for helicopters or humans in need of rescue. A couple of people have already tried -- one drove a van through the rear gate, ran over about thirty zombies, and made it all the way to the courtyard before hitting one of the concrete benches and nearly flipping over. I was taking my shift on the roof at the time. We called down to see if anyone was still alive in the car. We made ready to throw our "rope" (actually a bunch of electrical cords and chains wound together) down to anyone who made it out of the van and to the wall. No one made it out of the van, though.
The other guy drove in on a motorcycle, shooting off rounds from his handgun, but didn't make it any further than the faculty parking area before he was knocked off his ride and eaten alive. I can still remember his screams.
Liz is in the other room with Kieran, who mercifully has no idea what's going on. They're trying to sleep. I can't sleep.
I keep thinking about all of the old problems of the world and how they've all been swept away almost overnight ... and replaced with one new problem that's worse than any of them.
Please, if you're reading this and you're still alive ... comment and let me know. If you're in Louisville, tell us where. Maybe we can send out a crew to get you. Maybe.
blog like it's the end of the world!
