Working in a zoo atmosphere, it's interesting looking at animal rights issues from this side of the fence.
And ultimately, I have come to the conclusion that a significant number of people who fight against the keeping of animals in captivity (particularly in zoos and circuses) are either misinformed or simply ignorant of actual facts of the situation. I won't say everyone, because it's not; however, seeing as these positions are held by the governing activist organizations, I have to generalize at least a little bit.
Lately, animal rights groups such as PETA and IDA (In Defense of Animals) just plain piss me off. Captive elephants are my most recent point of interest. Websites such as
Help Elephants in Zoos , among others, have such misconstrued information that, really, it sometimes makes me laugh.
People against the American Pit Bull Terrier also bother me. Now here I'm referring to the actual breed, not the generic "pit bull" term that people and the media throw around when referring to attacks by any number of large dog breeds, although I have my issues with that as well. This position, of course, has arisen from both extensive reading and the acquisition of my beautiful APBT Stella, who is perhaps the best doggie I have ever encountered. And I'm sure everyone says that about their doggies.
...And really, I wanted to write a beautifully intelligent post about this topic, but it's 3:00 in the morning and I'm sleepy. Perhaps when I am more awake and coherent I will support my annoyances with the reasons behind them.
Anywho.
On that note, I shall first sleep and then return to the netherworld that is the zoo, where I spend most of my time trying not to get my ass kicked by my camel boys.
I like 'em anyway.
If anyone is ever up for some coffee or a rousing game of mancala, you know where to find me.
Or tea and dominoes, if that's more your speed.
