Dream Story

I just finished reading the Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler - almost a week after I wrote the exam about it, naturally :P! Modern English literature suffers from the same disease - as an avid reader I was permanently put off modern literary novels by their insistence on only allowing miserable stories about unlikeable people. :-(

At least we have Shakespeare, Austen and Dickens, and a number of other pre-20th century authors who are allowed their happy endings.

:( I just don't understand whyyyy ;_;. I'm not against tragic literature - sometimes (though admittedly not very often) I enjoy that too. But honestly, the stories that have inspired me were not the Hamlets or the Don Carloses of literature - but characters I could relate too, who went on a journey to achieve their dreams and succeeded in that (for the most part at least).

I was thinking of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens when I was writing that xD. And also to some extent of Arthur Conan Doyle, P.G. Wodehouse and all the others ... see, I don't think that in the German literary culture those books would be considered literature. Or at least Conan Doyle and Wodehouse wouldn't. That's just tragic in my opinion D: (And also the reason why I prefer to read British literature ;)!)
