I watched a documentary today called "This is what Democracy Looks Like" on Free Speech Television. It was about the WTO protests in Seattle and the media's obfuscation of the event. It is really good to watch. Environmentalists, labor union members, human rights activists, and indy-media activists all joined together to strike down the WTO's anti-human and anti-environmental policies. The best part........they won. The good guys won, not the corporations.
Granted, many had to endure what none of us would ever dream of. They were beaten, shot at with rubber bullets, and sprayed with OC gas. The mayor of Seattle banned the sale of Gas masks during the protest, so that the protesters could not protect themselves. The National Guard also ripped off the gas masks of those protecting themselves.
When asked by national news services how many people were injured in the protest, the mayor and chief of police both replied, "Only about 20." Untrue to say the least and only perpetuated by an inadvertent and nonverbal obfuscation of the truth in the favor of the US corporations that stand to gain by the WTO. Of significant importance is the fact that the mainstream media also gains from this.
However, I am not here to make a list of crimes. I just wanted to point out that things can change when we all come together against forces of oppression. We are not alone in this world even though we all feel that way. We have to do what we can to stop the oppression of this administration with its Orwellian Patriot Act and its wars in the name of terror that commits itself. We can win, and we must.
