What is with all of these insane Victorian women? I think these kinds of stories say a lot about the woman who wrote them. Anyways "A Rose for Emily" has to be one of the least shocking and suspenseful of the macabre short stories that I've read. I'm not sure if the intent was to shock the reader but if it was then Faulkner did an outstandingly poor job. If it was a tragedy however then it was amazing because it is certainly sad as hell, but if that's not the case then I'm not incredibly impressed. I'm a stickler for pacing and for mood and stories have to evoke a certain level of fear and discomfort in order to be truly shocking and the tone of this particular story rang more loudly with pity than it did horror. I guess this is all just a rather complicated way of saying that I just wasn't at all entertained by the story. However it did manage to somehow reawaken my penchant for classic thrillers, so I suppose that's a good thing.
