*Yawns and crawls out of bed, turning to see all of you standing there*
What the...OH SHIT! HI!
What's up everybody? Sorry I haven't posted or updated in a while. Things have been kind of crazy for a while, but they're finally settling. I thought I would assuade the concerns of all both people who read this journal (hi dad).
So the short of it:
- I graduated college. That was awesome.
- I couldn't find any work in Minneapolis. Less than awesome.
- I fell into a depression. Totally not awesome.
- I ended up moving home to Chicago. The verdict? Surprisingly awesome.
I was anxious about it for a while, but moving home to Chicago is just what I needed. I'm staying with family for now, reconnecting with friends, and making it a point to make new ones (thanks Mojdeh). When I look back on it? Minneapolis was killing me. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret going there. But it basically broke down like this: loved the city, loved the people, loved my school, loved the teachers, loved the classes, loved the students, loved all my friends...COULDN'T WAIT TO GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE.
In the meantime, I've gotten a job working at the warehouse for Follett Textbooks, and it's worked out surprisingly well. I go in in the morning, I receive and stock textbooks, and go home. Everyone's nice, I can do the work, the pay is good, and believe me during this recession I'm just happy to be working. No complaints.
I'm trying to keep my energy up in the evenings though, because my inspiration has slowly started to come back. I have a bunch of ideas and I'm hoping to implement them in time for conventions. Among them...
- A full color graphic novel satirizing The Iliad, co-written by my good friend Elanor Smith
- A black and white autobiographical book detailing my experiences during my grandma's funeral two years ago
- A children's book
- Filming short movies with some friends, again co-written and produced by Elanor
- Most exciting...a published version of Oh Goodie!
You heard me. Recently I was attempting to make it back to Minneapolis for CONvergence, until my friend Tim offered me table space at FallCon. I've been pussy footing on finally getting involved in conventions and agreed. At CONvergence I would've just hung out, got drunk, and partied. FallCon, there's a good chance to promote myself. I'll be selling two self-published comics. One is a comp of Oh Goodie material, the other a compilation of other short comics I've done.
I'll also be doing a massive overhaul on the website. Seriously, you may log on and find nothing there for a little while. Fixing links, adding a proper archive and scrolling method, fixing the layout, you name it. Going through my old comics I realized how happy Oh Goodie made me, and how much I've had planned for it but haven't implemented yet. The last few months made me realize it's time to stop planning for my life and to start living it, and that means taking my art for serious.
Mark my words, I'll be finding a way to do my art and get paid to do it. It's less becoming "what", but more a matter of "how" or "when".
Stay tuned.
