[ficlet/drabble] guitar-hero!jim for laws_of_dawes

He has no idea who's idea it was, or even where the X-Box came from. Or why his unit was crowded around the television in the briefing room on the slowest Tuesday night in history. All he knows is that the dispatch radio is sitting in on the table, turned up loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the wannabe rockstars if a call did come in.

Jim also has no idea why he agrees to watch.

They're taking turns and laughing at each other, but it's Ramirez who baits him into picking up the guitar shaped controller.

"C'mon, Lieutenant. Unless you're afraid you're gonna get whipped by Wuertz."

Well.

This is certainly better than some of the things HR could come up with as a way to bond the unit.

"One song," he orders, rolling his eyes as he walks across the room and takes it from her. It's fairly simple, and he glances at the controls a moment and fingers the buttons as he gets a feel for just how it works. "You know, James doesn't even have one of these, how am I..."

"Just pick a song and play it."

Someone pipes up that they should pick an easy song for the boss, but Jim eyes the selections on the screen before he resists the urge to fight a smirk under his breath as he finds one he already knows. Granted, a real guitar is different than this, and he hasn't played it in a few years...but some things are just like riding a bike. They come back to you.

"What do I get if I score enough to pass," he asks, before he glances at the assembled officers. "I'm not schooling you all for free, you know."

Wuertz offers to buy donuts for a week and Ramirez promises Starbucks instead of the crappy coffee in their kitchen, and he nods. Sounds good enough.

It starts off with piano, raising a few eyebrows before it actually gets to the good part. The controls take a moment to get used to, but it's really not that hard. Especially by the time the song actually gets words.

Midway through, Wuertz is beginning to regret offering donuts for a week.

Stephens looks impressed.

And Anna is trying not to laugh at the sight of her boss owning on one of Jethro Tull's greatest hits.

Once the level ends, and the score comes back (and he definitely did well enough to pass) he turns to the other officers and hands the controller back to Wuertz.

"Chocolate with double sprinkles."

And then to Ramirez, "House blend with one sugar, Detective."

"Got it, Lieutenant."

Jim smiles, just a bit, as he walks out of the briefing room. "Carry on, then."

What happens on slow Tuesdays at MCU stays at MCU.
