Had a restless night so got up late and took carriage to
Museo Borbonico where is a wonderful collection of statues, bronzes, pictures etc., re the
Toro Farnese found at Rome and the
Hercules are the finest examples I ever saw. The remains found at Pompeii are remarkable and embrace every kind of
machine and instrument in daily use. The collection of
surgical instruments including specula and in rotas (uteri) struck me as very curious. Went to see the
cathedral of St Januarius where is fine monument of Saint Restituta[?] by
Canova and a
special chapel in wh. the cheat of the
liquifaction of the blood is carried out 3 times a year. Called on Prof. Palasciano who explained the Neopolitan operation of
Lithotomy then drove in carriage to
Reclusorio (poor house of vast size) past docks through heart of city, wh. is very close and dirty and on the way home fell very cold and chilly, so stayed at home all evening and took care of myself.
