Took bus from
P. Venezia to railway station and walked thence to station of tramway beyond
Porta San Lorenzo. The day was fine and we had an agreeable company in a Scotchman named Park: we passed a circular tomb1 like that of
Cecilia Metella and the acqua Albrida [?] on [?] sulphur springs which are evidently strongly sulphurous. Then up a steep ascent to
Tivoli which is prettily situate among the hills. From the Garden of the Sibeyella Hotel, which contains the circular
temple of the Sibyl there is a fine view of the
falls which are partly natural and partly artificial: the
Anio forming cascades of great beauty and the water also coming through an artificial tunnel in the mountain and falling in a straight line 320 feet. Visited Neptune and the Siren's cave under the guidance of the raggedest and most cheerful
cicerone I have met with. He would not be got rid of though three of the guides kicked him and tried to drive him away. Park and I walked down the hill to
Adrian's villa and spent an hour exploring, but we only got a mere impression of it as it is a vast ruin and would have taken a day. At night we saw the
Coliseum illuminated by the full moon and...[?]
