Rome, of which we had a good view from the roof terrace out of our bedroom on the fifth floor, embracing Pincio Gardens, Barberini Palace; and not liking our room or the price (30f. [?] for the night and breakfast) we went to H Minerva at back of Pantheon and in centre of city. Called on Father Mackey and gave up his brother’s treasures. Then saw interior of Pantheon where Raphael is buried; a fine relic of old Rome with no side lights but only a round opening in centre of roof through wh. rain and sun shine equally fall. Attended English Church outside P[iazza] del Popolo, well attended. Good sermon. Staid1 for sacrament. After lunch took a drive in Borghese gardens and on Pincio. Bright sunny and picturesque. Band playing. Rich and poor from the Queen of Italy downwards enjoying the sunshine and the music. The carriages are as fine as those in Hyde Park and the Italian officers are fine [?] handsome. After a very good dinner at our hotel, went to a cafe where was a respectable company and smoked a cigar.

1. Stayed.
