I've been playing a lot of my own music lately, coming up with lots of ideas. Most of them are disparate parts that arent really connected into proper songs yet. I've been in a rootsy mood as of late, and a lot of the music I've been coming up with has had a kind of organic bluegrass/folky feel to it. I like the simplicity of it.
I'd like to play with some more people, nothing concrete, just the opportunity to have some people help me expand my ideas. The stuff I'm looking to do isn't heavily electric though. Mostly Im feeling acoustic stringed instruments, and maybe an electric bass. An electric slide guitar could be cool. Drums would be tasteful, and probably not overly busy, but rather "clever". It would be amazing to have a bowed instrument, ideally a violin or fiddle, but I know there aren't exactly droves of violin players among us. Horns too, I just thought, could be an interesting complement.
Inevitably, comparisons are made. I wouldn't want to make derivative music by any means, but for the sake of evoking in readers a somewhat accurate idea of the music I'm going for, I will list some music that has inspired me lately, and I feel is a good benchmark.
Calexico: Probably the closest in regards to the sound I envision right now. Very organic and evocative music. You can hear the fingers sliding on the guitars and can just about hear the dust blowing by.
Iron and Wine: Very humble, backwoods vibe to this music. Was actually backed by Calexico at one point and it was brilliant.
Mississipi John Hurt: This guy sounded like a full band. Great stories told in his lyrics about interesting characters. Great sound.
Planxty: A great Irish Trad band that although isn't quite what I had in mind, does have amazing instrumentation and does inform what I had in mind.
If anyone is interested, let me know.
