Last week was the M y S Q L users conference. Fun time. Met lots of interesting people. Lots of really positive feedback about both the database and W i k i p e d i a. Met B r ad and M a r k from here.

On Thursday I accompanied J i m b o in a presentation about W i k i p e d i a, handling the database questions at the end. Got a laugh when I told the audience that they were their biggest threat to their data because we all know how to type drop table. Part of a broader theme that what admins do or don't do has caused more problems for W i k i p e d i a than any faults in M y S Q L itself.

Extra spaces and leading blank paragraph presented to you by search engine avoidance strategies mixed with discussions of one possible way LJ may help crawlers circumvent no bots with RSS and Atom. Not really practical long term though. I wonder if someone has started a site using the LJ codebase which firewalls all known search engines, or just blocks them from all journal-related content, to preserve the pretty good balance between public comments and search engine lack of visibility which no bots has so far provided?
