Random Deep Gaming Thinkery

had this random thought about my D&D gaming world. With the right things happening, it could turn into modern day earth.

let's look at the evidence.

Currently, it's a world populated by 2 races with a common genetic background. Recently, mankind has come into the world, but right now, they're few in number and only found in one place. The world is also populated by various mythical and fantastical creatures. So how is it that this kind of environment could become Earth?

Well, atm there is this plague that has yet to be unleashed upon the world. The Bleak Wind. If it were to be released, all of one of the 2 races would be wiped away from existence and half of the other race would go with it. So, if the Bleak Wind were to strike, it would take 75% of the population with it, leaving only a small portion as the remainder. This disease was crafted to rid the world of one of the 2 races that started off here, so it's possible that mankind would be immune (or less effected by it, at worst). This would level the playing field between the indigenous races and man.

Over time, man would slowly, but surely take over this world (given mankind's current model of doing just that about anywhere they go). this turns the world into one dominated and probably eventually singly owned by mankind. After that, there is really just the matter of those fantastical and mythical creatures. More than half of them would no doubt be hunted by man into extinction (it is one of the things we do, after all). As for the rest...well.

Currently in play in my campaign are these portals that have been opening up randomly about the world. ATM, they are just as prone to letting something through as they are to allow something to leave, but let's pretend for a moment that whatever is causing them is never fixed. It stands to reason that over time (the same time it would take mankind to slowly own the planet from the orcs and elves), these creatures started slipping through these portals to other world, leaving this one forever. Eventually, anything that once lived here would become myth and legend, having left little or no real trace of their existence behind. And if, once they were all gone, the portals stopped opening, nothing new would come over either, leaving a world normalized as hell.

so, yeah, after careful consideration of these events, I realized, if the heroes don't manage to stop these two event from either continuing or happening at all, this lovely fantasy world could eventually become dull, dry modern day world. It could eventually become Earth.
