I am aware of the stigma enjoyed by self-publishers, and it is with some trepidation that I realize I have become one by placing Macho Caballo on the marketplace. There were many reasons for avoiding this step -- 'real' publishers will avoid me when and if I should have a novel suitable for them, and the 'marketplace' of book publishing has become a maelstrom of feeding frenzy since anybody and everybody can pop a book in the mill and put it out to sell.
This proliferation of 'self-publishers' means the marketplace is flooded with works of questionable value with many almost unreadable. We hear self-proclaimed 'experts' brag about 'I put out a book filled with garbage and I'm selling hundreds of copies a day!'
Adding to this misery is the onset of spammers who are turning away from email and making their money by 'publishing' their pitches, or popping out hundreds of titles a day by copying legally and illegally anything they can get their clutches on. There's a lot of junk out there, folks.
Small wonder you can put good, quality stuff out and have it go unnoticed.
It ought to be discouraging, but...
Volume II, The Quest of Macho Caballo, will be ready for publication, soon. Heck, I've got four volumes in all to finish. I've got work to do. If I'm going to fail as a self-publisher, it won't be because I didn't give it a good effort.
