Dinner yesterday was puerco pibil with black beans and rice, with a chocolate mousse for dessert. The Pibil was good, but a little dry: my foil seal proved itself as effective a barrier as the Maginot Line. Recipes online I perused for tips and tricks put a lot of stock in the use of banana leaves to retain moisture during the 4 hours the dish bakes, the next time I do this dish (it's one of my favorites), I'll be prepared. Another thing the intar-web told me is that the dish can be finished in a conductive enclosure (hay box, buried with hot coals, whatever), and that the dish owes its origins to a technique used to roast a whole suckling pig in a coal-lined pit until the meat was ready to fall off the bone - I'm willing to bet I can convince Tom and Sunday to undertake a rather ambitious BBQ sometime this summer. The mousse was nice, and pretty quick to make with my super-sexy MixMaster ("Mike"). I made it mexican-y by adding coffee, orange, and cinnamon flavor to it. It was good served with freshly made whipped cream, but a little too rich to be eaten in large portions. Had a few drinks with dinner, and renewed my appreciation of tequila. Watched the first half-hour of Big Trouble in Little China - easily the best bad movie ever made. Rolled over to floor for a mercifully short house meeting, watched the new Family Guy, went Bowling, came back to floor for poker. Poker was incredibly long - we didn't finish until a quarter past four, but it was also incredibly fun. It was a three-handed game between me, Tom, and Queens for a couple of hours, with Mike going from short stack to chip leader and back again a few times - everyone's stack went up and down, but Mike had the biggest swings. I ended up taking out Queens in heads up, further cementing my title as his official nemesis.
