How did fuelling oneself become so confusing?

Of course, I am once again searching for the best weight loss diet ever. You know the one - you get to eat what you like, when you like, never go hungry and miraculously lose 20 kilo? Yep, that one.

I read a lot, so I now know that carbs and cereals are the reason we're all fat (Paleo, Harcombe, Atkins etc); Meat and dairy will kill you (any high carb low fat diet you care to mention); low fat is the way to go, who cares if it's got a shit ton of sugar in it (Weight Watchers); only eat at 5 hour intervals and only combine certain foods...it's all so confusing.

The only things I have taken away from this accumulated learning are that sugar is indeed addictive and has no nutritional value; the grains we eat today are not the grains we ate 100 years ago and are, in fact, bad for your gut; avoiding processed food where ever possible and cooking from scratch is probably the single healthiest change I can make.

On review, my basic eating pattern is very healthy. Breakfast is either porridge or fruit and yoghurt (plus healthy sprinkles like pumpkin seeds). Lunch is wholegrain bread and protein sandwich or salad or soup. Dinner is lean meat and veg or pasta and veg. Wholegrain versions of everything where possible, cooked from scratch and a limit on processed food. I know it's the diversions that cause the problem - eating breakfast so early I am starving by 9am and I sit above the restaurant kitchen at work and there is bacon and toast smells. Chocolate. My Beloved LOVES his cake and chocolate. He is also getting a distinct podge. Is that my doing? Or is he eating more because he's happier?

Anyway, I digress, as I do from the healthy core of my daily diet.

I also sometimes wonder why I worry about the number on the scales so much. Despite the scales not budging, and despite eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted over Christmas, all my clothes are starting to hang off me a bit and my size smaller but still too tight to be comfy clothes are all comfy. Muscle replacing fat?

I blame the obsession with BMI which was all know is utter shite.
