It been a few weeks since Yamada was the new student in school that everyone was excited about. People were now used to seeing him with the best friend duo of Yuto and Chinen and have started treating him a bit more normally.
Somehow, Chinen found himself left alone with Yamada quite a lot and he ended up talking to the elder, telling him everything -about his likes and dislikes, his family, friends and work. In the same way he also learnt quite a lot about the other guy. How Yamada was born into quite a rich family and had one older sister and one younger sister. That he was a massive strawberry freak but absolutely hated tomatoes. All these different things, he found from talking to the guy but he also started to notice other things. For example, even though the guy would annoy him, Yamada would also protect him.

“Hello master, would you like any more drinks?”
It was almost closing time in the maid café and today Chinen was also working as a maid. There were only a few people left in the café and this man was the last person he needed to serve before he could go home.
“Hmm… no I’m fine but maybe I could have something else.” The middle-aged man reached out and took hold of Chinen’s wrist.
“Umm… sir,” Chinen was getting a bit uneasy and he tried to take his hand away from the man’s grasp but couldn’t without seeming to forceful or rude to a costumer.
“What’s wrong?” he smiled creepily as he started to pull Chii towards him.
Out of nowhere another hand took hold of the man’s arm and pulled it away. At the same time an arm wrapped around Chinen’s waist and he felt his back press against someone’s chest.
“Sir, if I could just remind you that this is a maid café so could you please keep your hands off the staff. What you are looking for is not part of the service here.” A boy’s voice came from behind Chii. He seemed to recognise the voice from his rescuer and the strawberry scent seemed familiar too. When the younger turned his head, he was surprised to see the handsome face of Yamada glaring at the man with anger.
The man just grunted in annoyance, left his payment on the table and rushed out of the café.
Chinen breathed a sigh of relief as he continued to lean in the arms of Yamada; it felt so safe and comfortable and just right. However, when he felt Yamada’s arms tighten around him, he snapped back into reality and realised what he was doing.
The younger got out of Yamada’s arms hastily and bowed, “Arigatou Yamada.”
“Its ok Chinen,” Yamada said smiling, “Are you ok? Be more careful next time ne. In those clothes, you are irresistible to men.”
Chinen kept his head low as he was slightly embarrassed, “Hai. I will be more careful. Right now I’m fine- it’s thanks to you though.”
“Good. That perverted man! I would have gladly punched him in the face!”
“It’s ok Yamada- I owe you one.”
“Can you stop calling me Yamada? It’s too formal.”
“Umm then what should I call you?”
“Well how about Yama-chan? That’s what my other friends call me.”
“Ok then. Well thanks again Yamad- I mean Yama-chan,” Chinen said, as he started to leave and go to the back of the café. Then a thought occurred to him.
“Hey Yamada! Um. Yama-chan!”
The elder turned, “Yeah?”
“How were you able to save me? Were you always here?”
Yamada gave that slight sideward grin, “Yep. I was always here- your knight in shining armour. I wanted to see you in that cute maid outfit again.”
He then winked, which made Chinen blush furiously and rush to the back.

Hmm… Well even when Yamada was being kind and protecting him, he was still annoying, Chinen thought but with this he realised he had started to quite like the guy. He had gotten used to Yamada’s company and actually enjoyed it. He would wonder if maybe he could consider Yamada a friend now, just like Yuto but then he would remember when the elder would say something like ‘is that any way to talk to your master’ or ‘you’re still my maid’ and he would feel his heart crush. They weren’t really friends. He was just being Yamada’s maid to keep his secret hidden and he had to remember that. Yamada really had no interest in actual friendship. It was more of a way to past the time in their school, which Chinen found out, he actually never wanted to go to in the first place.
Today was one of the few times where him and Yuto were alone together. It felt just like old times but that also reminded him of Yamada and he felt a slight ache again though he didn’t really understand exactly why.
“Yuto…” Chinen started uncertainly.
“Yeah.”
“Why would someone be hurting if they’re friends with someone?”
“Sorry Chii, I don’t exactly understand where you’re coming from. Wait is this a personal question?”
Chii’s eyes went wide, “Umm… No! No. It’s actually my umm… sister. I’m not sure on what to tell her. She’s acquainted with this guy but they’re not actually real friends and it hurts her knowing this but she doesn’t know why.”
“Oh it’s for Saya-kun. Well… I guess maybe it is because she has feelings for the guy,” Yuto said.
This statement made Chii stop. Feelings of more than friendship? Towards… Yamada?
His brow furrowed in thought and a small frown played on his lips.
“Yutti how would you know that you have feelings for someone?”
The elder guy turned to look at Chinen with an amused look on his face, “What’s with all these questions about love? And why are you asking me? But I guess from what I’ve heard, if you like someone you start acting differently around them.”
“How?”
“Well you’re heart races when you’re with them. You can’t help but act all jittery and nervous- blushing is involved a lot too. However, they also make you feel safe and comfortable. You enjoy their company and are happy whenever they’re around.”
As Yuto’s words sank in, Chinen felt like he couldn’t breathe. He clutched his chest.
“Hey, Chii are you alright?”
“I think I just need some fresh air,” the younger replied as he ran up to the rooftop.
He breathed in the wind that hit him as soon as he opened the heavy door. He wished that the wind could clear his mind, sweep away what he had just heard and realised. Sweep away the inner turmoil that was now building inside him.
He shook his head. No. Please no.
However he knew no matter how much he would try to deny it, what he had realised was the truth.
The truth was that he had fallen in love with Yamada.
Chinen mentally hit himself. Why did have to be like that? Why did he have to fall in love with that guy? Why?
Know realising the truth about his feelings, he knew he couldn’t continue with this anymore. He had to stop the one thing that tied him to Yamada so he wouldn’t get hurt any further. He had to stop the hole from digging any deeper.
------------------------------------------------
It was the next day and for the whole of last night the young guy couldn’t get any peace. Thoughts and feelings kept on overtaking him and had been building inside.
Creak
Chinen turned around and found himself facing his nightmare.
“Hello my maid,”
Yamada gave that sideward smile that Chinen had gotten so familiar with and now he realised, would always managed to make his heart leap the slightest bit when he saw it.
He had to stop.
He bit his lip as he turned to look away from Yamada, eyes closed as he tried to prepare himself for what he was going to do.
Being ignored, Yamada frowned, “Hey you can’t ignore your master.” He turned the younger to face him but faltered slightly when he saw the look on Chinen’s face.
“I quit being your maid.” Chinen said in a dead tone.
“Sorry?”
“I said I quit being your maid. I’m calling the deal off. You can go and tell people, I don’t care.”
“Ok then Chinen that’s fine with me but I wasn’t going to tell anyone-“
“Yeah. Whatever. But now there’s no need for us to be acquainted in any way. We don’t have to talk to each other anymore. We don’t have to hang out and pretend to be friends. Actually do you know what, why don’t we just pretend this whole thing never happened?”
“What?” Yamada didn’t understand why all these words were coming out of Chinen’s mouth.
“Well anyway it was nice meeting you,” Chii walked past the confused elder, his hands clenched tight by his side, holding his breath in.
Yamada grabbed hold of Chinen’s wrist, “Wait- where do you think you’re going? What are you saying? I thought we were-“
“Let go off me!” Chinen commanded through his clenched teeth, trying to stop the tears in his eyes from escaping.
“No! Chii I thought we were frie-“
“Don’t say it.” Chinen heard his voice crack, “Don’t say anything. Can’t you see I don’t want to have anything do with you anymore.”
He felt Yamada’s hands slightly loosen around his wrist as he said those words and took the opportunity to run away, Chinen let the feelings he had been holding go and tears poured down his face.
