texts ease to a close
covers meet with hundreds of pages between
highlighted, underlined, crossed out, folded
gently pressed together at the end of the year
closed for the last time in this class

the people here, the discussions:
both things we have to remember
have to--because we cannot return to this

windows close
one-by-one, light switches are turned off
leaving 30 desks with 30 chairs on them
in the dark
empty desks, empty chairs
The students have gone home and another year is over

no more recess duty, no tattling,
no phone calls home and no dreading flu season.
no, none of that. School is out.
The teacher needs a break.

There are gardens overgrown,
grandchildren to rock,
and memories to make.

No more papers to grade
no morning lunches to count
the lights are out, the room is empty
the door closes
-Thanks for letting me play, too-
