On the wonders of technology

Our phone was out of order since Thursday. We couldn't call out, and the caller I.D showed the numbers of people trying to call in, but we weren't receiving the calls. We called the phone company via Mom's cell phone, and they said that a worker would be by between 12 and 5 o'clock on Monday. So, we languished without outside communication for the weekend, which was a huge pain in the arse. By 4 o'clock today, I was beginning to think that no one would show up and we'd go another one or even two days without the sqawkbox. But, a little after 5, the phone rang, scaring the crap out of me. An Aliant worker, who sounded "very far away" asked if the phone was now working correctly. I said yes, and asked what had been the problem. It was difficult to hear him, but it sounded like he said the Internet connection and the phone connection were too close together and he moved them. Strange, but, whatever, now we no longer have to fuss about a lack of communication.

It's given me a thought about how much we rely on technology these days. There are some people who are happy to be without things like a telephone, computer or television. And there are those of us who freak out without these things, not because I am a big fan of talking on the phone (I actually dread it sometimes), but because we rely on them for staying in touch with the world. Or, at least, in touch with the take-out Chinese food. ;p
