Alec opened his eyes, taking in the room. He didn’t remember getting here. He didn’t remember where here was. And then the sigh from beside him instantly calmed the panic that had been building through every muscle in his body.

He rolled over and ran his eyes over Rachel’s form sleeping beside him. The sheet laid over her body, clinging to her curves. Alec could see her bare shoulders, and he gently pulled on the sheet to cover her away from the chill of the morning. Gently, he trailed his fingers along the side of her body, feeling her heat through the sheets.

The last month had been a blur. Even with his skills, he’d never imagined running from Manticore would be this difficult. He allowed his thoughts to wander to the 12 from '09. He had to give them props. Everyday was a struggle to remember who he really was and why he was here, lying beside the daughter of the man he was supposed to kill.

He could remember the confrontation on the stairs. Rachel crying. Shouting for her father. Alec desperately trying to convince her to run. She had tried to run to her father, but Alec had subdued her at the bottom of the stairs just when an explosion filled the air outside.

Rachel had been silent then.

Alec had held her close as he navigated her through the house to the back. The property had its back to part of the Washington forest, and Alec dragged her along as she cried.

She had hated him that first week. But she loved him too. Even he was able to see that. But, he’d stayed his distance, understanding that things may never be as they were when he was her Simon. Alec had a lot to answer for.

But, it had only taken two weeks for Rachel to approach him quietly and hug him tight. They had spent that first night holding one another while Alec shared his story with her. Trying to get her to understand what he was. And why he’d done the things he’d done. Rachel tensed when he talked about his missions, but she stayed clinging to him.

The next day they had kissed. Timid, but longingly.

The next two weeks were filled with running, hiding, trying to be as far from Washington as possible. And making love.

Staring at her now, Alec wondered at his existence before he’d understood caring for others. Before love. Rachel was a part of him. And no matter what was coming in the next month, he knew she would always be a part of him. And her smile and kisses told him it was the same for her.

He just hoped they would make it. He knew Manticore never gave up when there was something they wanted. And they wanted him.

But he wanted Rachel more.

I was going to be really cruel and make this a dream, but I thought I'd go for the happy ending instead. :)
