I came back from Cairns yesterday but it was too late to post on LJ. It’s absolutely the best to be back in Sydney and despite the wonderfulness of Cairns; Sydney is the place I belong. Cairns is a tiny city that is more like a suburb of Sydney and is really quiet. I can live with the humid weather but would rather not. When the plane landed I was just all “Woot~! We’re back~! I’m home~!” It was great. I didn’t hate Cairns that much but it wasn’t that “OMG! WOW!” Everything felt really mild.
Even though it wasn't the best trip possible, I had a lot to talk about. An unbelievable amount perhaps. Put the rambling under a cut.
We didn’t see much either. The first day it was rainy and we were on the coach for most of the day. A grey Christmas day really put me off. The sticky weather put me off even more. I lived with last year’s grey Christmas but to come to another grey one and know that Sydneysiders were having a fabulously hot and clear Christmas day just really annoyed me.
When we went back to the hotel it sucked too. For a 4 star hotel, it was really shit. It felt more like they should have given it 2 stars. But it’s Cairns right? *thinking back on the 4 star hotel in Jiuzhaigou* I lived with it.
The second day was the worst out of the four days I was there. The sea was rough and we had to go on a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef for scuba diving. Well, if were thought we were in for a wild day we sure weren’t wrong. I got seasick and I was just sitting inside feeling like crap. I was holding the sick bag because I knew I was going to throw up. One of the crewmembers saw me and told me to go outside because I would feel better. Outside was a tad better but I was already pretty sick so I was just leaning against the rail and moaning.
It was the really bad kind of sick. The type when you want to vomit but you can’t. I always get that type of sick and it was bad. Later my mum and sister came and they gave me ice cubes and this random foody thing. It tasted like Chinese medicine. Not very nice. I just ate all the stuff they gave me though. My mum told me to sit down so I did. I slept for the rest of the journey but not without a decent amount of moaning and groaning.
We arrived shortly but we had to turn back. Everyone was pretty pissed off. Heaps of people had vomited. My mum had vomited twice. You could see the crewmembers carrying countless bags of sick. I couldn’t wait to get off the boat. I knew I wouldn’t feel any better until I did. I slept the whole way back but it was a deep sleep. It was a my eyes are closed and I look like I’m sleeping sleep.
Just before we arrived back at Cairns, my mum and my sister abandoned me. It sucked. My hair was askew and a soggy mass because of the sea spray and my awkward sleeping position. I got off the boat half asleep and looked around for a familiar face. I squinted and put my arms over my head because it was sprinkling. I stood there for a few moments and tried to figure what to do. There was no familiar face and standing outside in the rain like an abandoned kitten didn’t seem great. I had nothing on me. No money. No mobile. No hairbrush.
I went back inside and the whole place reeked of vomit. I saw my mum and she called me over. She was telling me to hurry up and get some food. Fantastic. I queued in the line and had my grumpy look on. The day had just been absolutely wonderful.
We went back to the hotel and decided we would go for a swim in the hotel pool to make up for missing out on scuba diving. It wasn’t the same though but we all desperately wanted to swim. I didn’t know how capable I would be though. I know how to swim but before then, I hadn’t swum since life saving in Term 1 of Year 8. *laughs* When I went it, it felt like rediscovery. Like you’re meant to blow bubbles when your head is under the water, not hold your breath. xD You’re supposed to breathe when you turn your head out of the water.
As I didn’t have goggles, I just swam breaststroke most of the time. It’s my favourite stroke because it’s the most relaxing. Other than that, we talked and did handstands in the water. I was fail by the way. There was a grandmother who we were talking to and she could do the handstand but we couldn’t. 8D I never mentioned who we was did I? 8D Well, originally, I’m in this little friend group of seven people. Three kids and four adults. Generally, we are my sister, our friend and me.
It was nice though. The water wasn’t too cold. There was a nice view and there was plenty of small talk. It was even raining which was awesome. We had to go back to change not long after though. I spent one hour in the shower and my mum got pretty pissed off. Anyhow, we managed to get out at 7:40ish for dinner and we had Japanese.
The food was okay and they had this coloured water. It had no flavour but it had colour. I think it was barley tea or something like that but I’m sure. We went back to our hotel straight afterwards because we wanted to watch Titanic. We got back at 8:50ish so we missed a bit. However, we did get to the end of the movie and I loved it. I loved the whole relationship between Rose and Jack. Jack was just a fabulous character, especially his perspective and attitude to life. The ending was most splendid. The way they go back to the Titanic and Jack is waiting. Isn’t this the type of thing girls always dream about? xD Maybe just me. 8D
The next day wasn’t that fascinating. We went to see a mangrove and the Daintree Rainforest. I’ll just talk about the highlights. We got ferried over a river whilst we were still on the bus and I had never done that before. It was really slow though. We saw an Ulysses butterfly. Two in fact. The blue colour on their wings was brilliant. It was an amazing sight to watch it flapping through the sky. The reflection of mountains and mangroves on the river was also stunning. The rest of the day was pretty boring. It was pouring and we saw some tiny wallabies in a horse paddock.
I went back to the hotel and this is when things start going really downhill. The friggin housekeeper stole my towel. >.< I was really annoyed. I never found it. Gone. My favourite towel too. I hate that hotel. I had Korean that night and it was the best dinner I had in my entire time in Cairns. I went back and I watched the comedy festival show and it was pretty funny. Most of it at least. My favourite was this group, which I’ve forgotten the name of, and David Boyd? David was Scottish I think. Loved his accent.
The group was absolutely hilarious! They have to sing a song from a musical basically. They ask the audience to give them a song title and the host does just that. This man gets asked and he gives them a song title. I can’t remember exactly what he said but it was something along the lines of “My pubic hair grew legs and left”. The song was pretty funny. They said it was from the musical “Shaved” and it had started off when the person had shaved and left the pubic hair on the windowsill. A radioactive spider had come along and bit the pubic hair and suddenly, the pubic hair had legs! They group just sang and sang about the pubes and their adventure. It was just the most hilarious thing.
I feel asleep not long after because I was going to have a long day tomorrow. We had changed the schedule of things and we would not be going to another rainforest but to Green Island instead. We would finally have a chance to get into the water and look at coral!
The next day we went and got on another ship. I got seasick again. DX Luckily, the trip was really short so I was not too sick. Green Island was really pretty. It had awesome little beaches and the clearest ocean water. I first had a little look at everything, got my snorkelling gear and headed for parasailing. Parasailing is a non-scary activity that contains little excitement. The best thing about it is experiencing the sea breeze. You only see the vast ocean and the outline of Green Island and some nearby islands.
After parasailing, I finally got to hit the water. Snorkelling is the best. It’s not scary at all and seriously, you don’t need a lifejacket. It’s an absolute waste of money. The water is warm and really refreshing. It’s amazing to watch the fish swim next to you and to just float and watch the subtle movements of the coral. The coral was not as brightly coloured as I expected it to be but nevertheless, it was still amazing. Being able to see this coral also gave me the desire to draw. I always loved drawing coral and fish. I wasn’t very good at it but I loved to do it.
It’s only been one day but I wish now that I were snorkelling in those waters once again. I think lots of introverts will like snorkelling. For me, I felt that snorkelling was being able to lose myself in another world completely. You could go off alone and look at the fish. You could just float there, losing yourself in the life there. In the short time that I snorkelled, I completely lost myself in that world. When I wasn’t in the water, I felt like a flailing fish that had just been taken from the water. (Of course though, fish don’t die because of the lack of oxygen but rather the change in temperature).
We left pretty soon though. At around 2:30. I wasn’t seasick on the trip which was really really good. I had honey macadamia ice cream and I also finished “The Vampire Armand”. I loved every part of this book. Every time I read a section I feel like I have become enlightened in a different way. It’s not just the characterisation that makes me love this book so much but the development and exploration of ideas. The way Armand’s journey as a vampire helps us explore not only the meaning of a vampire’s life but a human’s life. The exploration and development of what life’s purpose and what part religion holds in it is the most amazing part of the plot.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I’m thinking about buying it online because $25 is becoming a little too much. Besides, I don’t want to use up too much money. But then again, I’m always really picky. I only like the new cover and I like my things new.
I’m rambling a lot aren’t I? *laughs* Anyways, I got on the plane not long after I got off the boat. The plane ride was smooth for the most part. I slept for most of it and when I didn’t, I played with this little kid sitting across from me. I felt great when we landed but I hated the fact that I had to wait so long for my dad to pick us all up.
We had dinner together which was great. The food was pretty decent, especially after being in Cairns for four days. There was a lot of fun talk going on. I went home and it was almost eleven. I checked my emails and I had 32. When I saw that I was just like “WTH!?” I didn’t think I’d get that many emails when I was away. There were some pretty awesome emails though.
I finally heard from Jas and I got an email from
sachikaoguri . From
sachikaoguri , I finally saw the pictures of
tashiwwww and his girlfriend. From Jas, I heard that she had been away and also looking at all the emoticons that Gmail had to offer. It was pretty funny. I’ll quote it.
"

"
I think I’ll shut up now.
I’ll put some pictures up in another post. I don’t want to overload you guys and I need to find that camera. Hmmm.
