Feeding the Homeless

Nov 19, 2006 01:24

I had a very fulfilling day today. I went with my mother in law & Poy's cousins to DC to feed the homeless. Although I was a witness of a more deplorable state of poverty in the Philippines, I could not help but feel the same kind of angst against injustice & question how a man loses his decency of living. It must be a pattern after all, not something created overnight. Kumbaga perpetuation of poverty is a fact. Ang daming nakapila, yung iba pabalik-balik.. They even said they were getting bags for those left in the shelter. Nakakainis din kase malalakas sila.. man, can't you use some brawn? Meron pang iba na nag-aaway kse mas malaki ang portioning nung pakain sa plate nya.. hello? pinakain ka na nga. I did not see the embarassment in their eyes anymore. I'm sure behind the tough covering is a crying soul but what's the point of being vulnerable? So, their lives just revolve around free meals & alms. Ang galing lang kse yung nag spearhead ng project ay isang Pinay. Her name is Thelma BIlly (she's married to an American & she has been feeding the homeless for 10 years). Recently she was awarded for her community work & got tagged as the Mother Theresa of the US. Read this article, nakakataba ng puso. At isa syang Nay-pips! We should all be proud of her. Sabi ni Mama, nagpapakain sya every week, & she just relies on donations. Everytime she gets cash as donation, she returns them & requests for something in kind. Yung garahe nya raw sa bahay nila eh puno ng donations from Safeway, Costco, Sam's Club (I can even do my own grocery-shopping there). Yung mga itim talagang niyayakap nya at very sincere yung makikita mo sa kanya. Kahit ilang beses syang tanungin ng mga itim, you won't sense irritation in her voice. I'm really glad I was able to be part of this humanitarian deed, it always makes a difference to do something that touches the heart.
On a lighter note, I recommend Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig as James Bond. No matter how he got criticized for not being par with other James Bond actors, I felt he represented a more human James Bond. He is your regular Brit guy, nothing fancy even if he wears the best suits in the film. His fight scenes were not even precise, like malalaglag sya ilang beses samanatlang nakatayo pa rin ang kalaban, parang pusa, ang tagal ng buhay, but that's the beauty of it, the whole movie felt more real, not spy-like na parang di man lang pawisan si Pierce Brosnan kahit ilang milya na ang tinakbo. Plus may bonus pa nung lumabas si Daniel Craig from the water.. Basta, panoorin nyo, it's worth it.,
