top chef love

you know how much i love to cook and putter around in the kitchen, no surprise there. i love anything that is related to cooking, as i've said in one of my previous posts. TV shows are no exception- i LOVE them and they inspire me. i love how professional chefs/tv chef personalities cook in front of the camera and make me want to taste/make their food. it keeps that passion going (choz).

i wasn't a huge Top Chef fan until last year, saw all seasons and found it really interesting (and entertaining). back in late 2008 when we first moved to NZ, it was being shown on TV and i didn't really pay any attention to it. probably because i still wasn't doing a lot of cooking then (and didn't have our own place yet).

Top Chef is now on its 8th season, the most entertaining by far, since the cheftestants are previous competitors in their own season. i think season 6 has the most talented bunch of chefs; but the funniest group of chefs are from season 4, thanks to Spike and Andrew. my favourite all-time cheftestant would have to be Carla "Hootie-hoo" though, because she really comes across as a sweetie and her food is simple but has complex flavours.

for this season, i'm definitely rooting for Dale Talde. pinoy pride y'all! i really want him to sweep the competition, but that's a tall order as my boy blais is still in the running. well, my top 3 would be blais, dale and carla. each week the competition gets stiffer and i get attached to everyone so it's hard to see people leave. another plus for watching this season is anthony bourdain! he's a great judge and i love his snarky comments. :)

a spin-off is Top Chef Masters, which is so much fun because it pits top-notch, well-known chefs against each other. it is so hilarious watching these top dogs work on their challenges, with the space/equipment constraints, etc. this is where you see the ingenuity and creativity come out from these masters. i love jonathan waxman! he's so funny in the kitchen. and susan feniger is what i want to be when i grow up!! she's the epitome of cool.

another spin-off is Top Chef: Just Desserts. i was hopeful this was going to be a runaway hit, but nah... don't bother. the cheftestants (personality-wise) are just lame. although gail simmons is a good host, i'm not really into the other judges, apart from hubert keller.

i can't wait for this week's TC episode. every week it gets even more interesting and reading Anthony Bourdain's blow-by-blow account on his blog is even hilarious!! also twits/blog entries of cheftestants themselves. i think this week's ep has something to do with Italian cuisine, so Fabio probably has this in the bag. but we'll see. :)
